THE COSMETIC REPORT
February 27, 1998

Here's breaking news for all you Stila fans: we have color swatches and a full review of Stila's new Lip Rouge ($26)! Check out the first two colors, pout and moue, at:

Stila Lip Rouge Colors http://www.kleinman.com/cosmetic/liprouge.html

Not since nail polish in pen form have I seen anything like this. Stila has created a truly non-transferable lipstain that doesn't eat, kiss, or wear off (without a heck of a lot of work). Lip Rouge is packaged in a handy, go anywhere silver pen case that looks a little too much like a magic marker. You may get some strange looks from anyone watching you apply it, but it's worth it. Lip Rouge is premiering with two colors, pout and moue (my personal favorite), with more to follow for a total of 6 shades. Both pout and moue start sheer and can be layered for deeper color. I give Lip Rouge 5 out of 5 stars, but be aware that the marker-style tip can temporarily dry out if you don't store the tube tip-down.

I love having a large collection of lipcolor choices, so when I spotted a new lipgloss from Nat Robbins, I couldn't resist. HydraWear Lip Gloss (around $3 in drugstores) is a thick, nicely shiny gloss packaged in a squeeze tube. The stiff sponge applicator at the end of the tube helps spread the gloss down to a comfortable, even layer that lasts fairly well (for gloss). The color selection includes wearable basics like chocolate kiss (my favorite), cocoa kiss, raspberry mocha, vienna, think pink, red kiss, and silverado. If you like gloss, this is a great find that I readily give 5 out of 5 stars.

While learning about individual products is great, sometimes it helps to know how different brands of the same product compare. This week I tackled drugstore concealers, starting with Jane No Show Concealer (around $3). This lipstick-style stick concealer is easy to apply right where you need it, but I found it wasn't the best around the eyes. It blended poorly on dark circles and caked into fine lines by midday. For blemishes, discolorations or miscellaneous spots on your face, No Show is average, earning 3 out of 5 stars.

Maybelline Undetectable Creme Concealer (around $4) doesn't even come close to living up to its name. Its creamy formula cakes and creases easily (especially around the eyes), making my face look heavily made-up even with a relatively sheer application. I wonder if the drugstore where I bought it will take it back... Undetectable gets 1 out of 5 stars.

Of the three drugstore concealers I tried, I liked L'Oreal Hydra Perfecte Concealer Protective Hydrating Cover-up (around $6) the best. You only need a tiny dab to effectively cover spots and discolorations without caking or creasing. Hydra Perfecte is fine around the eyes, but isn't quite opaque enough to cover very dark circles. Because Hydra Perfecte is very creamy and moisturizing, I would choose a drier product for covering blemishes. Four of out 5 stars makes this an almost perfect choice.

It's Beauty Pack time again here at Cosmetic Connection! Congratulations to February's lucky winners... Ann Lucia of Sebastopol, California and Stephanie Ainsworth of Rincon, Georgia! March could be your lucky month to win a customize Beauty Pack of cosmetic and skin care samples. All you have to do is enter (one entry per person, please)!

The Makeup Diva is in! Considering all the products I've reviewed, it's hard to remember which ones were good, bad, or just plain ordinary. This week our Makeup Diva puts together a list of mascaras we've reviewed complete with comparative ratings to make your shopping a little easier. Don't go to the mall without it!

Coming up next week, Cosmetic Connection will bring you a complete report of MAC's new spring collection, Shades of Venus. These new colors promise to be softer and more wearable than last season's vibrant oranges and purples. See you then!
