THE COSMETIC REPORT
April 10, 1998

It seems like every new skin care product on the market these days is chock full of botanicals and anti-oxidants. While you can't really "feed" your face from the outside, using topical vitamins and botanical extracts can help prevent premature aging from environmental and sun damage, repair any damage that's already been done, and make the skin look smoother and more even-toned.

This week our focus is on skin care products with green tea extract, an anti-oxidant believed to increase the effectiveness of sunscreens and prevent skin irritation. First on my list of green tea products to try was Sebastian SKIN Green Tea Daily Moisture Renewal with SPF 15 ($42.50 for 1.7 ounces, at salons). The most interesting feature of Moisture Renewal is the package it comes in - rather than a regular jar that you scoop the product out of, this jar has a pressure-sensitive top that dispenses the lotion out of a small hole in the center of the lid. Simply press the side of the lid for just the right amount of lotion.

For normal, combination, or slightly oily skin, I give Moisture Renewal 4 out of 5 stars as a nice (but spendy), lightweight lotion that leaves a demi-matte finish on the skin (great for under makeup). If you have dry skin, I can only give it 3 out of 5 stars because you'll probably need another cream underneath to get the level of moisture that your skin needs. For dry skin, I'd sooner recommend Estee Lauder DayWear cream or Basis Face The Day lotion.

For my night cream, I chose Basis All Night Face Cream ($7.99 for 2 ounces, at drugstores) with green tea extract, AHAs (lactic and citric acid), aloe, chamomile, and vitamins A, C, and E. This is a great find for any skin type - the gentle AHAs are effective but shouldn't be a problem even for sensitive skin, and the cream is lightweight so you can use as much as you need for your skin type. All of these benefits together with a fresh citrusy fragrance and very affordable price earn All Night Face Cream 4 out of 5 stars.

As I get older, I find that my beauty product needs have changed. Whereas I used to swear by clay masks and oil-removing cleansers, my new best beauty friends are concealer and eye gel! Both can make you look awake and refreshed regardless of how tired, stressed out, or busy you are. My green tea quest and need for a good eye gel lead me to Beauty Without Cruelty Green Tea Nourishing Eye Gel ($14.95 for 1 ounce, at health and natural food stores). This is a great little moisturizer full of every anti-oxidant you can think of that works well around your eyes, or on your whole face for a refreshing, oil-free pick-me-up. Great for any skin type, I give this gel 5 out of 5 stars. Try keeping it in the 'fridge as the ultimate relief for puffy eyes.

The Makeup Diva is in! Miss Diva returns to her column this week with a handy overview of the newest trends in lipcolor - lipstains and ultra-smooth glosses. Put down that boring brown lipstick and try something new!
