THE COSMETIC REPORT
June 5, 1998

Looking for more great drugstore finds? Last week's drugstore edition of The Cosmetic Report was a big hit, so keep those review suggestions coming for future issues. This week my entry for new drugstore favorite is Mild Daily Cleansing Scrub (around $6 for 5 ounce tube) from Biore (the company with the blackhead removal strips). For those days when your skin needs a little extra cleansing, this scrub is terrific. The non-foaming base is exactly like Biore's Non-Foaming Cleansing Gel, and the tiny exfoliating beads are gentle enough that you really could use this scrub every day. Any and all skin types will agree, Biore has hit a homerun with this new product. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

My quest to review the newest products never ends! During a recent trip to a local department store, I decided to take advantage of Clinique's Bonus Time gift-with-purchase. Although many of Clinique's skin care products are too harsh for my skin, this gift had a nice assortment of makeup, travel brushes, and treatment that seemed worthwhile. For my minimum purchase, their new City Cover Compact Concealer SPF 15 ($12.50) was my top choice. A companion to City Base Compact Foundation cream-to-powder makeup, City Cover is a silky concealer that turns from lightweight cream to smooth, undetectable powder in seconds. This is the first concealer I've tried that doesn't need a layer of powder over it to keep it from creasing or migrating. City Cover comes in four shades in a mirrored compact with its own brush (a little rough at first, but not bad). I really like this concealer and readily give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Since first trying Awake cosmetics during my recent visit to New York City, I couldn't resist investigating several other products in the line. With summer just around the corner, facial masks are always a nice treatment for sudden breakouts or excessive oiliness. Awake's two masks, Sebum Clear Mask ($40 for 2.1 ounce tube) and Smooth Clear Mask ($40 for 2.8 ounce tube), are both peel-off and designed to deep clean your pores and leave your skin looking fresh and smooth. My results were mixed.

I first tried Smooth Clear for all skin types, and was pleased with how smooth my skin looked. This mask is a bit thicker than most peel-offs I've tried, so it seemed to pull more dirt and gunk out of my skin. I'd give Smooth Clear 4 out of 5 stars (at $40, it's too expensive to be perfect).

Sebum Clear was another story. I knew it was designed for more oily, blemish prone skin (like the T-zone), but I never expected the mask to be like rubber cement! Unless you have very tough skin, I can't stress enough how uncomfortable this mask is to remove. I must have peeled and pulled for 5 minutes trying to get it all off, and by the time I did, my face was as red as a tomato. If I lived in New York City and could return this mask to the Awake counter, I would. It gets my lowest 0 out of 5 stars.
