THE COSMETIC REPORT
June 6, 1999

Readers like you frequently ask me, "What are your favorite products?", and of course my answer is ever-changing! This week I thought I'd share a few new favorites that you might like, too.

On a recent trip to the East Coast to visit family, I visited the MAC freestanding store in West Farms Mall in Farmington, CT to see the new foundation colors (click here for details on the new colors), and to check out the Studio Line Cream Makeup that you can't get at the regular department store MAC counters. This is not the Studio Fix powder foundation I have mentioned in the past, but a full coverage cream makeup that MAC designed for film and TV use. At first I was afraid the finish would be thick and unnatural, but it's actually very easy to use, easy to control the coverage, and looks like your own skin, not makeup. This product is NOT oil-free (has jojoba oil), but I had no acne problems whatsoever, and was really pleased with the texture on my normal-to-dry skin. This is also the first makeup I've tried that looks better when applied with your fingers than with a sponge. Just a small dab on the areas you want to cover blends easily and has excellent coverage. If you use it under your eyes for dark circles, just be sure to add a light dusting of loose powder so the makeup doesn't crease. (In case you are wondering, I wear NC15 in the new color scheme.)

As I've mentioned in previous reports, I prefer body washes over regular soap and am always on the lookout for one that lathers well but doesn't dry my skin. I thought I had found a winner with Dove Nutrium, the new wash with two products in one - a cleanser on one side of the tube and a vitamin E lotion on the other. When you squeeze the tube, the two products come together on the puff. This is a great idea in theory, but what ends up happening is that you go through one side faster than the other, so by the time you get to the end of the tube, you are either washing with straight cleanser (too drying) or straight lotion. Yuck! If Dove would incorporate the ingredients into the same tube, it would be much better.

Since the Dove body wash didn't work for me, I decided to try Oil of Olay's new Daily Renewal Moisturizing Body Wash. I think we have a winner here! This body wash has great lather and comes in two fragrances, Revitalizing (rather perfume-y) and Calming (my favorite since it's more subtle and light). It's not quite as emollient as Dove Nutrium, but still works well and leaves the skin soft and comfortable.

I rarely wear perfume, but once in a while I like to do something special for myself. Estee Lauder's new Pleasures Cooling Liquid Talc and Silky Massage Cream ($29.50 each) are my current fragrance favorites. The liquid talc feels cool and refreshing on the skin, perfect for hot summer days, while the massage cream is great for moisturizing dry skin; it has tiny jojoba beads that break open and add more moisture to your skin. Both have a light floral scent that is feminine without being overpowering.
