I am on a home spa kick lately, so this week I am pleased to
bring you reviews of just some of the goodies I am experimenting
with these days. There's more to come, too, as I continue to
slather on more scrubs, lotions, and treatments to see just
what's worthwhile. Enjoy!
Skin Market Bath & Body
My first order of some of Skin Market's body products got me
totally hooked to this line, and now I am slave to their newest
scent, "Feels Good" grapefruit ginger. I've smelled other
ginger-scented bath products (like Origins) and was not tempted,
but this one has just the right blend of warm spiciness and
light citrus to be a new favorite of mine. The grapefruit ginger
scent comes in Oh Yeah bubble bath ($6.95), Yes! Yes! Yes!
shower gel ($6.95), Right There body lotion ($7.95), and The
Glow shimmer lotion ($8.95). I now use the shower gel and body
lotion daily and have foregone any other scents until I get my
fill of this one. If you like spice, you must try it!
A very close second, for those of you who like a light,
pick-me-up scent, is "Gets Fresh" cucumber vanilla. It smells
stronger of cucumber than vanilla, perfect for those days when
you want something more refreshing. It also doesn't compete with
perfume the way the stronger grapefruit ginger scent can. Gets
Fresh cucumber vanilla also comes in body lotion, shower gel,
bubble bath and shimmer lotion.
Skin Market Sugar Scrub 5-Pack ($14.95)
This pregnancy my skin is so itchy, so I've been using more
scrubs and lotions to exfoliate and rehydrate. There are so many
body scrubs to choose from, but I'm really drawn to the sugar
varieties rather than salts, since salts can sting sensitive
skin (ever try one on freshly shaven legs? ouch!). If you like
to dabble in different fragrances, this multi-scent pack of
tangerine, blackberry, pink grapefruit, blueberry and mango is
for you. Each packet has enough sugar scrub for one very
generous helping (or you could share with a shower buddy :) !).
I tried both scooping the scrub out of the packet and squeezing
it into my hand (like you would a packet of ketchup), and the
scooping method definitely works better. One thing to keep in
mind: some of the colors do temporarily stain your hands, so
just remember to wash thoroughly with soap/cleanser before you
dry off.
You can find these and other tempting goodies at SkinMarket.com.
Philosophy The Greatest Love Hydrating Microdermabrading Scrub
($25 for 3oz)
Warmer weather always makes me want to exfoliate more, to help
get rid of that oily, sticky feeling. I'm more inclined to do it
in the morning, in the shower, so anything gritty or pasty can
get rinsed away easily by the shower. This new scrub from
Philosophy is a great one for those of us who want a good
scrubbing, but also a little protection from over-drying. It has
large pieces of sugar combined with silica, jojoba, chamomile,
safflower seed oil, and aloe leaf extract, so it really polishes
away dead skin but it also leaves a cushion of plant oils and
extracts behind. The sugars break down as you scrub, so you know
when you are done when there are no scrub particles left. If you
have dry skin, the plant oils combine with the water of the
shower to hydrate your skin, especially if you apply your regular
moisturizer over your damp skin; if you are oily, just follow up
with your regular cleanser to wash the excess oils away. The
Greatest Love is a keeper for me.
Philosophy The Great Mystery One-Minute Daily Facial ($20 for
3.3oz)
The Great Mystery is the perfect name for this mask - the
mystery is, what does it do, exactly? It's labeled as a fast
facial, but also as a treatment for rough elbows. It promises to
soak up oil but also hydrate dry areas. Confused yet? I was,
especially when I read on the label that its sea salt is for
exfoliating, but then the mask isn't a scrub but a thin paste. I
suppose it could be useful for oily skin, but that's about it.
It also contains marine extracts like plankton, algae, and kelp
(not sure what those are good for when they are on the skin for
such a short time). I used The Great Mystery several times and
didn't notice anything special in terms of cleansing or
exfoliating. I'm just not impressed with this mask.
Philosophy products are available at department stores as well
as online at philosophy.com, ibeauty.com, beauty.com, and Sephora.com
