THE COSMETIC REPORT
October 23, 1998

I get dozens of questions every week from readers like you asking about foundation - what are the best brands, colors, formulas for every skin type and beauty concern you can think of. I've tried more brands than I can count, and I know there are even more out there that deserve a look. Over the next few weeks, I plan to bring you a review or two every issue of a new or especially worthwhile foundation (and hopefully even some to avoid).

This week I tested the latest from Givenchy, Teint Ecran Creme Compact Foundation SPF 15 ($42). This cream to powder makeup is touted as being for all skin types and claims to protect the skin from environmental damage with an antioxidant complex. The truth is, the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E are so far down the ingredient list (after the preservatives) that they really won't do anything. So much for environmental protection.

I also had mixed feelings about the foundation itself. At first, I found it was a bit dry and difficult to blend - then I realized that a different sponge (something thicker and softer, like the one from Shiseido Liquid Compact) made the foundation go on more smoothly. I thought I was on my way to some success with it, until after a week of wearing the foundation, I developed tiny whiteheads on my chin and forehead (and had changed nothing else in my routine). Could the foundation be the culprit? I wasn't 100% sure, but I knew I didn't like it. I went back to Prescriptives Photochrome and the pimple problem cleared up within a day. Given a choice between Teint Ecran and the many other compact foundations available now, I would *not* run out to buy this one.

Do you ever just forget about wearing nail polish because it takes so long to dry? I do this (or rather, don't do it) all the time, but now I have no excuse. L'Oreal's new Jet Set Quick Dry nail enamel and top coat (around $3.89 each at drugstores) make quick home manicures easy - one layer of polish plus one layer of top coat really does dry in 60 seconds. You do sacrifice a bit of wear, since 60 seconds only gets you one coat of color, but if you are in a hurry or don't mind touching up in a few days, this speedy new polish is great.

I am usually really good about keeping my makeup brushes clean, but every once in a while, they get neglected. Shame on me, I know, but trying to keep the large collection I have clean is a real challenge using regular soap/shampoo and water. I was so glad to recently find a fast and effective alternative - Brush Off makeup brush cleaner ($9 for 2 ounce spray). Made by a company right here in Oregon, Brush Off is a spray that also kills bacteria and leaves your brush bristles feeling soft. Just spray it on the bristles, wipe off with a tissue, and you are ready to use the brush again right away. This is a makeup artist's dream come true! You'll find Brush Off online as well as in many major department stores.

Since I spend most of my time either on the web or at the cosmetic counters, I am always searching for interesting sites or resources online. This week I discovered that Bobbi Brown Essentials now has shopping online! If you wish you could try her products, or if you just want to stock up without visiting the counter, check out the new storefront. Together with Neiman Marcus department store, you can now buy Bobbi Brown makeup, skin care, brushes, and more from the comfort of your computer. One warning: there are a few "catches" to the service, so be sure to read the fine print.

Coming up in next week's Cosmetic Report, I am really excited to bring you my personal review of Epicuren Discovery enzyme skin care. This has been unlike anything I've ever used, so stay tuned for my complete evaulation.

Are you pregnant, thinking about getting pregnant, or know someone who is? I've gotten quite a few email from moms-to-be like myself, so this month I am thrilled to offer you a collection of product reviews on all the skin care goodies for this wonderful time in your life. From cooling leg gels to moisturizing belly creams, I've got a little something for all the beauty challenges you'll be facing. Stop by today!
