THE COSMETIC REPORT
March 26, 2001

Spring has officially started, but even if it doesn't feel warm and sunny where you are, you can create a fresh look for yourself with some pretty new spring makeup colors. Here are just a few we've been playing with lately.

One of my favorite things about Stila, aside from the pretty colors, is the packaging. For new seasonal collections especially, Stila always comes up with something special and fun. This collection is presented in colorful red and white gingham recycled cardboard, making it look just like a picnic basket.

Both eye and cheek colors are in oversized, multiple shade pots this season, making it easy to mix and match to create the best look for you. In Full Bloom Cheek Color Duo ($28) has both a warm and a cool pink, both of which are sheer enough to complement any skin tone. I like to sweep mine on with an oversized powder brush to get a fuller flushed effect. For eyes, there are two new eye shadow trios ($28), Picnic In The Park (medium pink, medium lavender, pink transformer) and Picnic At The Beach (warm peach, melon, gold transformer). I chose Picnic in the Park for my cool coloring and find the shades are sheer, wearable and easy to layer and blend.

For lips, you can choose from soft, pale sheer Lipsticks ($16) in Darla (pale peach beige), Miranda (light cantaloupe orange), or Juliette (sheer watermelon pink). If you like a glossy finish, the new Lip Glaze ($24) shade Grapefruit (pale frosty pink) tastes great and has just the right amount of shine. I love the easy to use pen design - you just click the base to dial up the color and it dispenses onto the attached lipbrush. Perfect for popping in your purse or pocket!

Nails looks so fresh and simple with new Nail Shimmer ($12) shades Chantico (light milky pink-peach), Bona Dea (sheer soft pink), and Rhea (sheer pink/lavender pearl). Both Chantico and Bona Dea would be perfect for the clean look of a French manicure.

These new colors were taken straight off the spring fashion runways, imitating the fabrics of Calvin Klein's current clothing collection. One of my favorite Calvin Klein products, Eye Color Wash ($14), is available this spring in limited edition shades of violet, water lily and citrine; citrine, a pale shimmery yellow, is a surprise favorite of mine. Each shade goes on sheer with one layer or can be intensified by adding more color.

Lips can either be berry-stained or neutral, choosing from Lip Color Wash ($15) in wine or Lip Color ($16) in iris (pale brown lilac). Lip Color Wash is more of a sheer stain, while Lip Color is a traditional lipstick. Personally I favor the richer color of the wine color wash to liven up my pale complexion; the paler iris lipstick might be better suited to someone with a darker skintone.

Face Color Wash ($23), a lightweight cream face highlighter, is a product I'd like to see in more shades. I like the concept, which like many of the foundation-alternative light reflective lotions sold by brands like Prescriptives, Revlon, MAC, Estee Lauder, and Avon, gives skin a soft glow and touch of color; what I'm not crazy about is the one color choice of crystalline, a warm light gold - it's just not natural looking on very pale or cool-toned skin. For women with warm, light to medium or light tan complexions, I think the gold would be flattering.

You can see all the colors at the Calvin Klein Collection Page at Sephora.com.

Vincent Longo Flowers Eyeshadow Trio ($20)
These shadows remind me of the multi-color patterns of Clarins' spring Impressionist shadows, with several colors together in one pot. Vincent Longo's are pressed into a flower design using one color for the petals, one for the center, and a third for the background. You can use each shade individually, or sweep your brush across the whole pot for more depth and variation of color. I picked Dreama (salmon, purple and pink) and Sheelee (dark mauve, light lavender and mango), but there is also Heather (purple, white and golden yellow), Kristin (gold, burgundy and ocean blue) and Stephanie (burgundy, pale pink and apple green).

All the newest Stila, Vincent Longo and Calvin Klein spring colors, complete with great looking color swatches, can be found online at Sephora.com as well as at Sephora and major department stores.
