THE COSMETIC REPORT
January 28, 2002

Not only did I get great suggestions following my plea for a decent conditioner for dry hair, but many of you shared with me that you are in the same boat. Cold winter weather combined with dry indoor heating can really do a number on your hair. Thanks to all your great tips, I think I could open up my own hair care store right in my shower! Here are just a few of the brands I tried.

Vidal Sassoon Moisturizing Daily Therapy
(retail $7.50 for 8.5oz, but paid $4.99 in store)
I am so glad this conditioner was recommended to me! It has literally changed the way I deal with my hair. Instead of struggling with knots and tangles in the shower, plus more tangles and breakage during combing, now my hair is incredibly soft and tangle-free! I also don't need to pour half the bottle on at once to get results - just a few pumps massaged in instantly detangle and work magic on dry, thirsty hair. This is my number one pick of all the brands I tried.

You can find Vidal Sassoon hair care products at your local drugstore, Target/Walmart, or supermarket, as well as online at Longs Drugs, Walgreens and CVS.

Citre Shine Restructuring Conditioner
Several readers praised this conditioner for making their hair soft and smooth; for me, I'd say it was just average. It does a fine job but I have to apply almost a whole palm-ful to completely coat my long hair. I still had some issues with tangling while the hair is wet, so combing was still difficult. If your hair is fairly normal and you are looking for a deep weekly treatment, this is a fine choice.

I found Citre Shine Restructuring Conditioner online at ULTA.com for $2.89, at Longs Drugs and Walgreens for $3.99, and at Cosmetic Mall for $4.69; the brand is also sold in drugstores and supermarkets.

Terax Original Crema Hair Treatment ($16 for 5oz, $45 for 16.9oz)
If money is no object and you are looking for a very rich treatment, Terax is a beauty insider's favorite. Several readers recommended this to me, and while I had actually tried it a few years ago, I decided to revisit it. Terax is a fantastic conditioner, but for the price, I am just as happy, if not more so, with Vidal Sassoon Moisturizing Daily Therapy. VS does a great job at a fraction of the price, so why pay more?

You can find Terax Hair Care at Beauty.com, LUX Beauty, Beauty Habit, Sasabee and in specialty boutiques.

Origins Knot Free Detangling Conditioner ($11 for 8.5oz)
This is another product that I tried years ago when my hair was much shorter. It was okay then, but it's just not potent enough now. If you have short to shoulder-length hair with minimal tangling problems, this is a good conditioner, but for serious knots and dry ends, it no longer makes my long hair knot free :(

Origins products are available at department stores as well as online at Origins.com and Gloss.com.
