Thermasilk Weightless Frizz Fighter (around $5)
I get just enough frizz to warrant an extra product in addition to my Abba straightening balm, so when I spotted this at the drugstore, it was as good as mine. I'd been using Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Styling Creme and was pretty happy with it, but I've found lately (as we get more rain) that I have to keep applying it throughout the day to keep the frizz away. What a pain!

Weightless Frizz Fighter is just that - incredibly light and undetectable in the hair. A couple of pumps (depending on the length of your hair) worked into the frizz-prone areas and it just disappears, with no stickiness. It doesn't add any extra styling control, which is nice for fine hair that can get weighed down so easily. When you fire up the blowdryer, this product really does control frizz and make the hair look smoother and silkier. I also like to use a small dab on the surface of my hair when it's styled to make it even smoother.

You can learn more at the Helene Curtis website (Thermasilk's parent company).

Dermablend Cover Creme and Setting Powder
I don't know why I'm embarrassed, but I am - I bought this Dermablend set from QVC on TV! What can I say, there was nothing on and I was flipping channels. I've never been a QVC watcher, but I know they have some great brands, like Smashbox and Philosophy, so when I saw a Dermablend show, I stopped. QVC seems to get all kinds of special kits and collections that are just for them; the set I got is called the 3 piece Discovery Kit. It comes with 2 shades of the cover cream, the loose setting powder, the makeup remover, and the gel cleanser. All the sizes are small, more for trying or for travel. I thought it would be a great way to try the products with a very small commitment.

The set was available in light, medium or dark. I was wavering between light and medium, but when light sold out within the first few minutes, I was stuck with medium. Luckily one of the two shades in the medium kit (Chroma 2 True Beige) is a fine match for my skin (the other was much too dark), and the powder is colorless, so I was all set to try it out.

Dermablend's whole selling pitch is that the makeup will cover anything and wear all day without budging. This was not my experience. I followed all the instructions, used a small amount just to cover the spots I needed to cover, and set it with the powder, but after just a few hours it had worn off as if I had never put anything on. I have much better luck with Jane Iredale Amazing Base loose mineral makeup (janeiredale.com, Beautydoor.com), so I plan to stick with that for my hard-to-cover spots.

Out of curiosity, when I looked at the label for the Dermablend products, I was shocked to discover that the cover creme contains isopropyl palmitate, a possible acne causer (rated for comedogenicity as 4 out of 5) - so much for "suitable for any skin type" - and the setting powder is simply talc and a preservative. I don't see anything special or unique about that.

Online, at a store like ibeauty.com, you can get the full size one ounce jar for $24 and the full size one ounce loose setting powder for $18; SkinStore.com sells the cover creme for $22.95 and the powder for $16.95. QVC.com has a variety of sets to choose from if you'd rather try Dermablend that way.

Lorac for Spring
We are finally getting our hands on some of the great new products and colors for spring. The one I'm most excited about is Lorac's new Sheer Wash, a roll-on cheek and lip stain that I hope to get and review soon. For now, my favorite is Lip Polish ($17.50), a sheer glossy lip paint packaged in what looks like a tiny nail polish bottle. I tried Revel, a sheer red, and liked the shiny finish and light was h of color. Layered over a red lipstick, you'd get some great shine impact. Lip Polish is high on shine but not staying power, so layering is a good idea for optimal wear.

Another new goodie for spring is the Refresh lip gloss quad ($28). The round pot has four of their popular gloss shades - Pink, Luscious, Lovely and Spirit. All are very sheer and look great alone or layered together or with your favorite lipstick. If you carry several lip colors with you at one time (who knows what mood you might be in?), this is a great space saver, and the glosses are foolproof enough to work without a brush or mirror.

You can find Lorac online for purchase at sephora.com.
