THE COSMETIC REPORT
February 20, 1998

Every time I visit my local cosmetic counters and the saleswoman asks me what skin care I use, it's never the same thing! I am constantly changing, looking for the "perfect" product. For the past several weeks, my bathroom has been Estee Lauder central, complete with a few of their basic skin care products. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with them (I haven't used EL since I was about 15) and could see buying some of these again.

Tender Creme Cleanser for normal/dry skin ($16.50 for 4.2 oz tube)
I really like how gentle and thorough this cleanser is. For those of us with skin that's more dry or sensitive, it's an excellent choice. I found it worked best if I applied it to my dry face, massaged it in for several seconds, then rinsed it off with lukewarm or slightly cool water. It removes makeup easily and doesn't leave a greasy film. If you like something that foams or lathers, this isn't for you. I'd give this one a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Splash Away Foaming Cleanser "for all skin types" ($18.50 for 3.4 ounce tube)
If you have normal, slightly oily, or oily skin, this is a great foaming cleanser that won't leave your skin overly dry or tight. The creamy lather smells fresh and leaves the skin soft and smooth. Personally, I didn't find the "for all skin types" claim to be true, however; it left my already dry skin tight and flaky when I used it both morning and night (just in the morning was better). Splash Away does remove face makeup well, but keep it away from your eyes to avoid painful stinging. For every skin type but dry, this gets 4 out of 5 stars.

Clear Finish Purifying Toner ($16 for 6.7 ounces)
This toner comes in two alcohol-free formulas, one for normal/dry skin and one for normal/oily skin. Both are effective, refreshing, and have a clean, fruity fragrance. The normal/dry version soothes with peach, lavender, and thyme extracts, while the normal/oily helps control oil with grapefruit, papaya, and orchid extracts. Both get 4 out of 5 stars.

DayWear Super Anti-Oxidant Complex SPF 15 ($37.50 for 1.7 oz jar)
While I don't think you have to spend $37.50 for a good moisturizer with SPF 15, I would do it again for this one! This medium-weight cream soothes and protects with hyaluronic acid, SPF 15, and an anti-oxidant blend of green tea extract, grapeseed extract, ubiquinone, rice bran extract, folic acid, and vitamins E, C ,and beta-carotene. While Estee Lauder says it's good for all skin types, oily skins might be happier with the new lotion form coming out in March. For normal, combination, and dry skin, I love this product and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

In addition to trying new skin care every few weeks, I am constantly replenishing my selection of hair care products with something new and different. This week, I added Phytotherathrie botanical hair care to my collection. I was recommended Phytosatine shampoo for dry hair ($16 for 6.8 ounces) and Phytherose conditioner for dry hair ($18 for 5 ounces) by the counter rep, so I decided to give them a try. I recently permed my hair to make it curly all over (it was curly in some spots, wavy in others) and easier to style (no more annoying straightening!), but it's a bit dehydrated from the chemicals. After using Phyto for a week, my hair is softer, less frizzy, and just looks better. The Phytosatine shampoo contains camelina sativa oil to restore softness, but I think the real results came from the Phytherose conditioner. Its abyssinia rose extract, cocoa butter, sesame oil, and shea butter make it a rich treatment that revitalizes the most damaged of hair. For dry hair, this conditioner is a must-try. Find a Phytotherathrie location near you by calling (800) 648-0349.

Looking for something fun and spring-y to add to your makeup bag? Prestige's new Stardust Loose Powder shadows (around $4 at drugstores) are a great, inexpensive find. Choose from "fairy" (light pink/nude pearl), "bewitched" (lilac), "hocus pocus" (gold), "abracadabra" (rosy pink), and "twinkle" (aqua blue). You can use them straight from the shaker container on your eyes, or mix them with your favorite lipbalm or gloss, or Prestige's Lip Potion lipbalm (around $3), to make shimmery colored lipgloss. I picked up "fairy" and tried it on both my eyes and lips. For Stila aficionados, the "fairy" color is like a cross between "kitten" and "jezebel" shadows. On lips, you can make it as rich or as sheer as you like depending on how you mix it. For eyes, just dip your brush in and apply; the color is light and blends easily.
