THE COSMETIC REPORT
February 26, 2001

Looking for a few new colors to perk you up before spring? Here's a peek at some of the goodies we've been testing this week.

Clarins Impressionist Lights Spring/Summer Make-Up 2001
Presentation is the main focus of this unique collection from Clarins. Each eye shadow and pressed face powder is a mix of multiple colors presented in an Impressionist-painting style compact (think Monet Water Lilies). The face colors swirl into one shade with a swipe of your brush, while the eye colors can be mixed or used individually depending on your application.

Palette Impression for Face
This silky pressed powder comes in an unmirrored compact that is quite a bit larger than most pressed powder compacts. There is no puff or sponge, since it is really designed to be applied with a brush. The two color options, Morning Sun (for light to medium skin tones) and Bright Sun (for medium to dark skin tones), are mostly one color with accents of lighter shades as well as dots of pink, mauve, and lavender to give the color some depth. The finish is light and slightly luminescent - great if your skin is looking winter worn.

Palette Impression for Eyes
Although each palette is named by color (The Blue Garden, The Coral Garden and The Mauve Garden), it's hard to pin them down to just those colors. Blue's main focus is light and slate blue, but you'll also find dark green, white, peach and brown. The Mauve Garden has a center section of mauve/lavender, but also quite a bit of dark green and violet with accents of yellow and white. Coral is more a mix of light peach, gold, brown, and copper with flecks of light olive green and magenta. These are stunning colors and such a fun way to experiment with new shades and combinations.

Gloss Impression for Lips
With all the beautiful color combinations in the face and eye palettes, I wish the glosses were swirls of interesting colors, too. Don't get me wrong, though - the colors are beautiful. Golden Light is a light peach-gold shimmer, Scarlet Light is a dramatic but sheer red with gold shimmer, and Violet Light is a rich grape also with gold shimmer (would be perfect for a deep skin tone). Scarlet is my favorite as I love reds. All three are shiny and rich without being too tacky or gummy. My one wish would be a small brush in the compact to avoid goopy fingers.

Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator Loose Powder
After trying the Face Illuminator lotion and liking the results, I decided to also try their loose powder. I've tried other powders with shimmer and most are just too sparkly for me (I'm not 17 any more); this one has a soft, natural luminescence that I can live with. The finish is soft, a nice finish alone or over foundation for someone who doesn't care for a matte face. The packaging is also handy - the powder is in the main compartment with a screw-top lid that houses a face brush. Skinlights powder comes in Natural Light, Golden Light and Bronze Light and is available at a drugstore near you.

Tony & Tina Environmental Rescue ($28)
If you are looking for a medium coverage foundation with a natural finish, and you don't have an acne problem, this is one to consider. This fluid makeup is lightweight but has good coverage for more than the average dark circle or slightly uneven skin tone. I liked it at first because it's also not overly matte, so both slightly oily and slightly dry skin could use it, but it does have some possible acne aggravators (cetyl alcohol and oleyl alcohol) that gave me a problem after a few days of use. Too bad, because I really like the coverage and natural finish.

Tony & Tina Therapeutic Eye Base (liquid) ($22)
This is the next generation of their original eye base compact cream; the liquid is supposed to have higher levels of extracts like cucumber, parsley, hops, ginseng, lavender, Japanese green tea, neroli, aloe, chamomile, aloe, vitamin E, horse chestnut, pomegranate and apple seed enzyme. The liquid form is a nice alternative to the thicker original cream, with decent coverage and a soft matte finish. The new liquid comes in three colors instead of just one, so women with medium or darker skin tones have a choice instead of one very light shade.

In Cosmetic News
If you are like me, you like to stay on top of the latest advances in skin care, particularly anti-aging. Copper peptide is becoming the new darling of anti-aging treatments and for the most part has cost a pretty penny (no pun intended) in brands like Osmotics and ProCyte's Neova. Coming in May, Neutrogena is launching their version, called Visibly Firm, in both night cream and eye cream. A leading copper peptide producer, ProCyte, will grant Neutrogena long term use of the patented copper peptide complexes technology for Neutrogena's product lines. This is big news to anyone curious about this new technology but is wary of $50+ price tags; Neutrogena's creams will sell for around $20.
