THE COSMETIC REPORT
April 1, 2002

Can I just say, I love my job! I've got so many new and exciting things to try, and that means new reviews for you. What can you expect in the coming weeks? Reviews of One Minute Manicure (talked about in just about every women's magazine lately), c*me prom makeup, Clarins Moisture Quenching Hydra-Balance Lotion, DDF Surface Peel Cream, Stila's special Mother's Day 5 pan and new Lip Glaze Palette, Vincent Longo Afresco-Matic eye shadows and lipglosses, and much more are in the works!

Sue Devitt Studio
I feel like I've been anticipating this line for ever! The buzz started months and months ago, so I am excited to finally have these reviews for you. It seems like Sue Devitt's c-weed foundation is what every makeup enthusiast is talking about, and I think it's for good reason. Read on.

Sue Devitt Studio Triple C-Weed Whipped Foundation ($39)
Foundation is one of my favorite products to try because any one could be like perfect skin in a bottle. From the selection of 6 colors, I chose Quiet & Still for my fair, neutral complexion (a great match). The whipped texture is light and creamy, like a fluffy moisturizer. You only need a small amount, and Sue has packaged a tiny spatula in the box so you don't have to put your fingers in the jar. I've tried applying C-Weed both with fingers and with a sponge, and I prefer the look from the sponge. I think the makeup goes on more smoothly and evenly that way. The coverage can be as sheer or as full as you make it - it all depends on how much you use and how well you blend. Although C-Weed is creamy like a moisturizer, if you have dry skin you will still need your regular cream underneath. The finish is natural and slightly matte, with good lasting power throughout the day. Because it's not overly moisturizing or dewy, I think it would work for any skin type. My one gripe is the packaging - even though it comes with a spatula, I still don't like my foundation in a jar. It's too messy compared to a bottle or tube. Aside from that, I love the color, light feel and smooth coverage.

Sue Devitt Studio Automatic Camouflage Concealer ($20)
Sometimes having a palette of concealer colors to mix for just the right shade is fun and makes me feel artistic :), but when I am crunched for time and just need my makeup to be easy, I appreciate simple products that deliver. This concealer does just that. The slim pen design lets you draw or dot the concealer right where you need it. The smooth, slightly dry texture is easy to blend with your finger, and it stays where you put it without fading or creasing. I've had good luck with it on dark circles, red spots, small blemishes and as an eye shadow base. One tip: since this concealer is so pigmented, start with a small dot and add more if you need to. You'll be surprised how little you have to use to achieve the look you want. Automatic Camouflage Concealer comes in 4 flesh colors (I use Quiet & Still), plus there is another shade (Bermuda Triangle) that is being marketed as perfect for dark under eye circles. I have no idea what is so great about this shade, but it must be pretty special because it's a dollar more than the others! Strange!

Sue Devitt Studio Silky Blush ($20)
Even though I love cream and gel blushes, I like to mix it up with a nice powder blush to keep things interesting. One of my favorite qualities about Sue Devitt Studio is her range of shades, and this blush is a good example. Silky Blush comes in 8 shades that all look soft and wearable. I chose Tralee, a brownish pink. It is finely milled, sheer, and goes on smoothly to give a soft glow.

Sue Devitt Studio Starbrights Dual Lip Gloss and Cheek Gel ($35)
I love kits like this! Having multiple colors in one case is so handy, whether you just carry it in your purse or bag, or you like the convenience for travel. I picked the pink set (Alhena) from a choice of pink, lavender (Capella), bronze (Electra), or apricot (Rana). You get two small squares of lipgloss and one large rectangle of cream blush. While the colors look deep and vivid in the case, they are actually sheer and soft on your skin. Do be careful with the blush, though - too much of the pink can look clownish. The lipglosses are very smooth, not tacky, and give a pretty shine to the lips. I apply everything with my fingers so the lack of brushes is no big deal. If you are looking for something new to add a little "spring" to your basics, this is a great kit to try.

Sue Devitt Studio Mini Lipgloss ($18)
The one drawback to having a range of similar colors to choose from is the challenge of making the best choice, especially online. I studied all 6 lipgloss shades and finally decided on Martha's Vineyard, a seemingly tame rose. Imagine my surprise when I opened my package and found a shocking bubblegum pink shade! Thankfully, as with all of Sue Devitt's other products, the colors are sheer and subtle. The texture is very smooth and moist, not tacky. I tend to wear just one lip color at a time, but you could certainly mix this with another gloss or layer it over lipstick for extra shimmer and depth.

Physicians Formula Skinsitive Face Powder
I almost got sucked in to the very convincing nonsense on the package for this powder; the statement "a revolutionary face powder to protect, respect and smooth" made me laugh out loud. A powder that respects me? What will they think of next. This is a basic talc-based face powder that has a light, smooth feel, but it is far from revolutionary. If you get a little shiny and want a pretty but inexpensive powder to take care of it, this is a decent choice.

Physicians Formula Pearls of Perfection Multi-Colored Eye Shadow Pearls
For a touch of shimmer, this is a nice little jar of powder pearls that you can wear alone or over other shadows. I recommend ignoring the package's instructions to apply with your fingers; although it is handy, the application just isn't as sheer and smooth as with a good quality makeup brush. Using your finger for powder can make the powder streak and look chalky on the skin, and that's not the most flattering look on your eyes.

Both of these Physicians Formula products are brand new, so if they aren't at your local store yet, just keep looking.

I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
