I get questions every day about which foundations I think are
the best, so this week's issue is devoted to some of my new
favorites. If you have a favorite that we haven't reviewed yet,
email me! We love to review new brands!
Susan Posnick Colorflo ($68 brush with powder; $28 powder
refill)
I have been a fan of mineral makeup since my first reviews of
brands like Youngblood, Jerome Alexander, Jane Iredale, Philosophy, and La Bella Donna. Unlike most foundations and concealers, mineral makeup is made up of crushed natural minerals from the earth, with typically very few additives. Minerals offer great coverage, a low risk of irritation or acne breakouts, sun protection, long wear, and a subtle sheen that gives the skin a natural glow. The main problem, however, is typically the mess - loose powder sprinkled on a tissue on which
you are supposed to swirl your powder brush and pick up the
color without streaking it all over your bathroom counter or
flinging it on the floor. Well, help has arrived with this
clever new delivery system from Dallas makeup artist, Susan
Posnick. She implemented the ingenious idea to put the powder
inside the brush, making it easy to dispense and easy to
refill. Click the button on the bottom of the handle a few
times, the powder flows to the brush head, and you are ready to
go. A few clicks releases enough powder for several
applications, and everything is self-contained so you can wash
the brush head without disturbing the powder inside the handle.
You can even refill the brush over and over by just pouring in a
new packet of powder. As for the mineral powder itself, it has
great coverage and leaves a soft, natural finish on the skin. It
comes in 10 natural skintone colors, plus a bronzer. I tried
both M1 (the lightest "very fair") and M3 ("light") and found M1
to be the best match for my light, cool-toned complexion; if I
should pick up any accidental sun this summer, M3 is just
slightly darker and would probably work.

Maybelline Smooth Result Age Minimizing Makeup
It seems that the only way you can buy makeup suited to dry skin
is to look for the ones labeled for "mature" skin. Is mature
skin the only kind that gets dry? I think not. I took a chance
on this new foundation from Maybelline and I am glad that I did.
Smooth Result is a creamy, rich makeup that goes on like velvet
and has some of the best medium to full, but still natural
looking coverage that I have seen in a long time. I pour a bit
into the palm of my hand (about the size of a dime), rub my
hands together, and apply it like moisturizer. It glides on
effortlessly and blends easily with fingertips or a sponge. For
days when I need a little extra moisture, or a bit more coverage
than from something more sheer, Smooth Result is my favorite -
plus it's oil-free, has SPF 18 sun protection, and doesn't
aggravate acne, which can still happen with dry or even mature
skin. If you are looking for a foundation with good coverage and
a moist, supple finish, this is it.

Neutrogena Healthy Defense Sheer Makeup SPF 30
On the flip side from Maybelline Smooth Result, if you are
looking for a sheer, light makeup that is just a step up from
tinted moisturizer, I highly recommend this new product from
Neutrogena. I've found it has a smoother, more even finish than
many tinted moisturizers I've tried, so I can wear it like
foundation on a "good skin" day and not feel like I am missing
something when I put the rest of my makeup on. Healthy Defense
Sheer also works for any skin type because it's oil-free,
non-comedogenic (doesn't clog pores), and fragrance-free. There
are 5 shades to choose from: classic porcelain, blushing ivory
(my shade), natural buff, true beige and toasted honey.
