THE COSMETIC REPORT
July 2, 2001

This week our focus is on something a little different - everyday luxuries for your kids. I know many of you are moms just like me, and with so many kid's personal care products to choose from, I thought I'd do a special report just for them. Here is a mix for babies all the way up to teens.

Baby Workshop Australia Aroma Baby
I was contacted by this line a few months ago and they were kind enough to send us some samples to try on our young testers :) The main products for babies include Pure Hair Cleanse, Baby Bath Gel, and Aromawipes. They also have diaper rash creams and balms, plus some goodies for pregnant moms like belly oil and massage oil. Everything is naturally derived, with no added color, fragrance, petro-chemicals, animal ingredients, talc or parabens.

For bath time, Pure Hair Cleanse shampoo and Baby Bath Gel are great for any age. The shampoo is very mild, using only distilled water, coconut and corn extracts, and orange and geranium oils to gently cleanse the hair and scalp. The consistency is a bit thick, like aloe vera gel, with low sudsing. The bath gel body cleanser also has gentle cleansers plus chamomile and lavender oils that aren't irritating to sensitive skin. My daughter's skin reacts to quite a few commercial soaps and body washes, but did fine with this.

After bathing, if your child suffers from a red bottom, their Moisturising Nappy Change Cream can come in handy. It's lightweight and contains soothing neroli, chamomile and rose oils, plus sweet almond oil and vitamin E. It works well as a light daily moisturizer in conjunction with a more traditional barrier-type cream.

Moms with kids of all ages know how often we seem to be washing our kids' hands and faces, so we need something to make it easy no matter where we are. Baby Workshop's portable box of Natural Aromawipes is perfect for stashing in a purse, diaper bag, or in the car. Each one is pre-moistened with water, glycerin, almond oil, vitamin E, rose oil and an essential oil fragrance blend. They aren't large enough or thick enough to use for the diaper area (unless you need something in a pinch), but they are perfect for sticky hands or messy faces.

Baby Workshop products are available in UK (The Nursery Emporium), New Zealand (many stores plus online at beautydirect.co.nz), Australia (department stores, pharmacy and children's wear/maternity boutiques - 500 stores including online at wishlist.com.au and naturallybaby.com), Indonesia (through Nine Months), Singapore (Nice Pages), and shortly in Korea and Japan. For the US they are speaking to eStyle.com, Sephora.com, BeautyCafe.com, Pampering Boutique, and Dots2.com, as well as a number of retail groups. For now, they are available through The Nursery Emporium or direct mail order (web site under update at aromababy.com) or email aromababy@bigpond.com.

Ombrelle Sunscreen Spray for Kids SPF 28 ($7.99 for 4oz at ULTA.com)
If you are looking for a quick, easy to use, broad spectrum sunscreen to keep your kids (or yourself) protected this summer, this spray lotion from Ombrelle is a great choice. You can spritz it directly on the skin or into your hand (for applying to the face), so you can easily use it all over. The only thing I would change is the SPF level - either make it higher, or offer a few choices, because SPF 28 is just not enough for a day at the park or any real concentrated time outside.

Ombrelle sunscreens are available at drugstores or online at ULTA.com.

Suave For Kids 2 in 1 Shampoo ($1.99 for 12oz)
Kids always seem to have problems with tangled hair, so a shampoo plus conditioner in scents they'll like (cherry blast, orange splash, wild watermelon) can really come in handy. This one from Suave works great, doesn't smell overly perfume-y or sweet, and is a great bargain at under $2 for a decent size bottle. It has nice, rich, tear-free lather from just a small amount of product, and it rinses clean with just enough conditioner left behind to make the hair really easy to comb. I would definitely buy this again.

L'Oreal Kids Tangle Tamer ($2.59 at ULTA.com)
Before I discovered the Suave 2-in-1 shampoo, I was battling every night with my daughter's tangled hair. This spray from L'Oreal made a big difference. On wet hair that won't untangle or dry hair that is a matted mess, a few squirts of Tangle Tamer makes combing out your kid's hair much less torturous. It also has a subtle pear scent that both parents and kids might like.

L'Oreal hair care is available at drugstores or online at ULTA.com.

Paul Mitchell Baby Don't Cry Shampoo and Taming Spray
A hairdresser friend of mine gave me these Paul Mitchell products as a gift. The shampoo is low sudsing, gentle on sensitive scalps, and rinses out easily. It's also tear-free, a "must" in my opinion, and it has a very subtle floral fragrance. The taming spray is basically a leave-in conditioner similar to the L'Oreal version above, but I like this one better because it has a finer spray that distributes more evenly throughout the hair, and is a bit more moisturizing.

You can find Paul Mitchell products at a salon near you with their salon locator.
