The spotlight is on drugstore products this week in our monthly Drugstore Issue. Thanks for all of your feedback and suggestions for this segment!
Vidal Sassoon Active Care 2-in-1 ($6 for 8.5oz)
I took a weekend trip to the Oregon coast recently and managed to completely forget shampoo and conditioner. Clearly, I was desperately in need of a vacation! While picking up some groceries out there, I spotted this shampoo and conditioner in one and thought, what a great idea for travel! I've been a huge fan of VS regular shampoo and conditioner for dry hair, so I had equally high expectations for this. Considering that my hair can get fairly tangled, this two-in-one does a great job of both cleaning the hair and leaving it soft and manageable. It was also nice to be free of the extra conditioner step. If you like two-in-ones, this is a good one that has the right balance of clean and conditioned.
Nivea Visage Gentle Cleansing Cream ($5.99 for 6.8oz)
One skin care line whose name I won't mention has my skin type nailed: Confused. Just when I think I've got the chin and cheek breakouts under control and I'm using all "safe" products, a new crop of blemishes erupts just to torture me. The drier my skin is, the more apt it is to break out, but if I am not careful with the face creams, I'll break out. I think I am the only person whose acne can actually clear up by slathering on more moisturizer!
To this end, I am again searching for the right combination of skin care so I can stop searching and leave the skin care reviews to the Panel (a lofty goal!). Foaming cleansers make my face angry, so I recently opted for this cleansing cream from Nivea. This is a great morning cleanser for the shower, and I don't think you need to have dry skin to enjoy it (just know that it is not oil free). The creamy base feels comforting on the skin, but you get a boost of exfoliation from tiny little beads that are a happy medium between gentle and grainy. They don't feel like much at first, but the longer you move them around, the more you'll feel them working. When you are done with your little spa treatment in the shower, the cream rinses off easily with no residue. The only possible downside is the scent - rather perfumy, like Nivea creams tend to be. If that doesn't bother you, I recommend this cleanser as a great way to start the morning.
Suave Naturals Moisturizing Body Wash($2.49 for 12oz)
Even though I love boutique and high-end shower indulgences, sometimes it's nice to just pick something up at the grocery store. Suave does a decent job with this body wash, and it's a steal at less than $3. You can choose from lavender, ocean breeze, sun-ripened raspberry or cucumber melon; the scents aren't as delicious as some other brands that use essential oils, but they aren't bad. The only drawback is that they have fairly detergent cleansing agents, so if you have very dry skin, just follow with some lotion. I noticed no dryness or discomfort.
Salon Selectives Completely Drenched Moisturizing Conditioner ($3.69 for 13oz)
Why stray from my beloved Vidal Sassoon Moisturizing Daily Therapy conditioner? I only found VS after a reader recommended it, so when a few of you wrote in and told me about this conditioner from Salon Selectives, I couldn't let the suggestion go untested!
Well, I won't be permanently switching from VS. While this is a nice conditioner for slightly dry hair, it doesn't instantly smooth my hair the way that VS does. I have to use at least three palmfuls of Completely Drenched to work it completely through my hair, and only after I've rinsed it out does my hair start to detangle. Combing it out is difficult, but the one positive is that my hair does feel soft and manageable once it's dry. I don't like it enough to switch, though.
I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
Until next time,
