THE COSMETIC REPORT
August 14, 1998

Since I've received so many wonderful congratulatory emails from all of you about my pregnancy, I thought you'd all like to hear that I will not be the only cosmetic junkie in the family! We are having a girl! When she is old enough, I'm sure she'll have her own column on Cosmetic Connection! Thanks again for all the nice notes.

The new fall colors just keep rolling in! This week, I'm pleased to share the new colors from Estee Lauder's "Be Jeweled" collection, and point out a few of my personal favorites. This collection is what I consider classic fall - deep, rich jewel tones in purples, reds, and gold. All of these colors should be available at Estee Lauder counters nationwide by September.

Lips

  • True Lipstick ($16) in "pure plum" (plum brown) and "bronzino" (shimmery copper brown)
  • Perfect Lipstick ($15) in "silent red" (classic, true ruby red)
  • Perfect Sheer Effect Lipstick ($15) in "brocade" (sheer pewter)
  • All-Day Lipstick ($13.50) in "rose sapphire" (muted lavender) and "antique amethyst" (bright magenta)
  • NEW Velvet Lip Stick ($13) in "gilded" (deep bronze), "garnet" (purple magenta), "ruby" (deep cool red), and "rose" (neutral pink brown)

Eyes

  • Two-in-One Eyeshadow ($12) in "midnight amethyst" (deep purple with hint of gold shimmer), "golden ice" (warm copper), "licorice" (deep gray-black), and "khaki" (muted olive green)
  • Two-in-One Eyeshadow Duo ($20) in "splendor" (coppery gold and medium brownish plum with a hint of gold shimmer)
  • NEW Line and Smudge Eye Defining Pencil ($15) in "black", "brown", and "khaki"

Nails

  • Perfect Finish Nail Lacquer ($5 for small bottles) in "antique amethyst", "ruby", "brocade", and "yellow diamond"

Face/Body

  • Minute Makeup ($27.50) in "goldstick" (light yellow gold)

The new Velvet Lip Sticks, and Line and Smudge Eye Defining Pencils, are a nice addition to EL's products, and I hope they stick around. The lip sticks are chubby pencils that work as both liner and color in one. The Line and Smudge eye liners come in basic colors but they have a handy sponge tip on one end to create a softer line.

My favorites of the collection include "pure plum" True Lipstick (great color, should work day or night for just about anyone), "rose" Velvet Lip Stick, "splendor" Two-in-One Eyeshadow Duo, and "ruby" Perfect Finish Nail Lacquer (those tiny bottles are the best).

I may be on skincare review hiatus, but I couldn't resist sharing a great find that I recently discovered. Whether you have full-blown acne or just a pimple here or there, The Body Shop's Tea Tree Oil Moisturizing Gel ($4.50 for 2 ounces) is a fantastic solution. Rather than drying out the skin with alcohol or harsh chemicals like many acne products or gel moisturizers, this one starts with soothing aloe vera gel and adds just enough tea tree oil to help clear up blemishes. I highly recommend this gel to anyone who is easily irritated or dried out by conventional acne or oily skin treatments.

The Makeup Diva is in! Choosing the best basic eye shadow colors for you can be a real challenge. Learn how to find the right shades, and a few tricks for applying them, in this week's Ask The Makeup Diva column.
