THE COSMETIC REPORT
September 17, 1999

This week our focus is on new, new, new! From a unique liquid makeup from Profaces to a worthy cause from Three Custom Color Specialists, if you don't find something in this report that you can't live without, we need to check you for a pulse! Enjoy!

Profaces Liquid to Powder Foundation ($24.95)
From the folks at Profaces who brought you makeup-artist quality color kits and professional brushes at wallet friendly prices comes a brand new and (I think) unique liquid to powder makeup. Most foundations that are called "liquid to powder" are actually a cream in a compact; this is in fact a liquid that turns into a powdery finish on your skin. The texture is silky and has very good coverage, even on hard to cover areas like redness or dark circles.

The one aspect of this makeup that stands out to me is that it is not for someone who never wears makeup or doesn't like the feel of makeup on their skin. This foundation is for the true makeup lover who appreciates the way a product looks and feels. If you are the kind of person who uses her fingers to blend her foundation or eye shadow because a brush feels too "detached", this makeup is for you.

Product details: Silicone based, oil free (but does contain beeswax), with vitamins A and E. Should work well for any skin type, but very oily skin might like some loose powder to stay shine-free. Comes in five shades:

#1 - For light porcelain to pale beige with cool undertones
#2 - For light to medium (neutral) beige with warm undertones
#3 - Neutral beige to medium beige with warm undertones
#4 - Deep beige with golden undertones
#5 - For dark skin with cool undertones

Should you decide to buy a bottle online, you'll also get a free "pink flocked sponge" with your first purchase. For details and ordering, visit http://www.profaces.com/products/foundations.htm

Urban Decay Surreal Skin 4 in 1 Powder Foundation ($25)
If powder foundation is your passion, this is the best one I've found in a long time - even better than MAC Studio Fix! Why? Surreal Skin feels really light and natural, and it truly works for all skin types. I also absolutely LOVE the compact; slim silver plastic with a mirror in the lid and a clear plastic hinged cover over the powder, so you can store your sponge in the compact without it stewing in the makeup. Clever! The sponge is also a perky purple rather than boring old beige :)

As for the makeup itself, I wore it every day for several weeks and never tired of it. No matter what my skin looked like in the morning, it always looked a little brighter and fresher after using Surreal Skin. The powder doesn't clump if you layer it on, it doesn't dry out the skin or call attention to any already dry areas, and the finish is never pastey or powdery. Surreal Skin comes in 6 neutral colors: Apparition, Vision, Hallucination, Mirage, Dream and Fantasy (I personally wear Apparition).

Three Custom Color Specialists "3C for Women" ($22.50)
I've reviewed quite a few 3C products, like their lipstick palettes and warm/cool lipstick colors, but this time they're working to fight breast cancer with a brand new product. For October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 3C has created a sheer, shimmery pink Lip Gloss symbolic of the pink of the breast cancer ribbon. The "3C for Women" Lip Gloss is packaged in the 3C's very cool "swing-out" pot and tucked into a pink gingham drawstring pouch created by designer Shoshanna Lonstein.

Besides getting an outstanding lip gloss and really cool little bag, you can feel good knowing that five dollars from your purchase will be donated to cancer research centers across the country. You can get one by calling 3C at 1-888-262-7714, visiting Henri Bendel in New York or E6 Apothecary in Boston, or shopping online here.
