THE COSMETIC REPORT
October 1, 1999

Now that it is officially autumn, I thought it would be a great time to share with you some of the new fall colors at the counters now. To kick it off, this week I've got a review of Urban Decay's new colors, plus an update to my Peter Thomas Roth review, and a sneak peek at an upcoming review of Body & Soul cosmetics. Enjoy!

Urban Decay Fall Colors
Back when Urban Decay first got started and green nail polish was all the rage, I owned a bottle of Roach and a bottle of Asphyxia, and I felt oh-so "alternative". Thankfully you don't have to sport blue or green nails to be "in" these days, and UD is forging ahead with some great new wearable shades for fall. This new collection, cleverly named "YDK" - hehe, a little millennium humor - has pleasing shades of mocha, fuchsia and purple that you can wear to the office, to a party, or just hanging around the house. Here's the lowdown:

Eyes: YDK, Acid Rain, Big Bang, and Crash shadows; Crash liquid liner
My personal favorite is YDK, a light mocha with gold shimmer. Crash is also really cool as a liner. All the UD shadows are soft, silky, easy to blend, and last well throughout the day.

Lips (available in lipstick and gloss): YDK, Big Bang
YDK is too brown for my taste, and Big Bang, while a beautiful color, is not what I'd call an everyday shade. I'd say check them out for yourself to see if they suit you.

Nails: YDK, Acid Rain, and Big Bang
I love, love, love YDK and Big Bang polish colors! YDK is a gorgeous neutral with a hint of gold while Big Bang is a stunning fuchsia. I like to wear YDK on my fingernails and Big Bang on my toes - looked great with sandals this summer!

Peter Thomas Roth Update
After my first review of PTR, I wanted to explore a few other products that I thought might be better for my skin.

PTR Botanical Buffing Beads ($30 for 8 ounces)
I first tried the Silica Strawberry Scrub from PTR and really didn't like how rough it is. The Botanical Buffing Beads scrub is legions better - gel base, lightly foaming, with tiny spherical jojoba exfoliating beads. It's super gentle, great for any skin type, and has whole leaf aloe vera so it's soothing. You also need the tiniest amount for your whole face, so an 8 ounce bottle will last a long time.

PTR Chamomile Cleansing Lotion ($30 for 8 ounces)
I thought for sure with a name like "cleansing lotion" that this would be a creamy, milky sort of cleanser, but was I ever wrong! It's really a lightly foaming cream with a hint of chamomile. It does a good job of cleansing, removes all makeup, and leaves the skin feeling really soft and supple, which is nice. You also only need a pea sized dab to clean your whole face, but I still think for what you get (a fairly basic cleanser), $30 is pretty steep.

PTR Aloe Tonic ($30 for 8 ounces)
This is another fairly basic product, but in the case of a toner, I think basic is good. I like the very short ingredient list here (water, whole leaf aloe vera, vitamins, preservative), and I found the aloe to be very soothing. With no alcohol, no fragrance, and no colors, this is a decent, but spendy choice if you have sensitive skin.

PTR is available online at Drugstore.com and Beautydoor.com.

Soon to be Reviewed: Body & Soul Cosmetics
I recently had the pleasure of trying the Body & Soul cosmetic line at my local Nordstrom, and I am really looking forward to doing a review. Unlike most lines, Body & Soul doesn't pretend to be for everybody; this is a line for the true makeup lover. From rich and glamorous nail polish shades to foundation packaged in retro perfume-style bottles, Body & Soul is all about feeling beautiful with makeup. In a few weeks I'll be reviewing:

Beauty Makeup (I got the lightest #1 shade)
Two in One Powder (I got the lightest #1 shade)
Concealer in "Creme"
Loose Face Powder (I got the lightest #1 shade)
Blush in "Parade"
Eye Shadow in "Champagne", "Telegram" and "Sultry"
Lip Glow in "Elixir"
Lipstick in "Jewel"
