THE COSMETIC REPORT
November 4, 2002

This week I am pleased to feature Reflect.com's new colors for fall, a collection called Shades of You. You can pick up a whole look - carefree, rebellious or romantic - or mix and match to create your own shades and collection based on the Shades of You colors. Each collection includes a powder blush, powder eye shadow, lipstick and dimension eyebrow pencil, all for $55. Read on!

The Romantic Look
Of the three sets, this one is closest to the shades I prefer. Flush blush is aptly named, since it does make your skin look flushed when you wear it. It's a bit brighter and deeper than the brownish pinks I normally choose, but for evening it's a nice color boost. Apply sparingly or you will look like a circus clown. Prude lipstick is a great cool cranberry shade that I could see choosing again and again. It's a notice-me shade that doesn't hit you over the head screaming "LOOK AT MY LIPS!" The only part of the set that I don't 100% care for is day dream eye shadow. This plumy copper shade is just a bit too pink for me and can make red or tired eyes look more so. Something with a bit more brown is more flattering, which leads to the next set...

The Carefree Look
What the Romantic look's day dream eye shadow lacks, wonderland eye shadow succeeds. It's a nice blend of cool gray with a hint of pinkish brown to make a universally flattering shade. Bohemian blush is a neutral peach-nude that might look nice on a warm skintone, but on my cool skin it made me look ill. Whimsy lipstick is a pretty, sheer, cool pink that reminds me of bubble gum. While I'm sure I could pull it off with my fair skin, I've just never liked light pink lipsticks, so I would pass on this shade if I had to choose again.

The Rebellious Look
This set is my least favorite of the three, but if you like a smoky eye and nude lip, it might be for you. Metalhead eye shadow is a smoky navy-gray that is versatile depending on the look you want (all over the lid for deep, smoky color, or just as liner for a hint of depth). The tomboy blush is very peachy and pale, almost like a light coral. I suppose if you have a warm complexion it might look good, but on my cooler skin, it's very unflattering. The same goes for mock-rock lipstick - very nude-peachy-beige - which is fine if you like that sort of color, but it's not for me.

The nice thing about Reflect's new colors is that you can personalize the collection to suit you. Under the "Personalize" tab on the Shades of You page, you can mix and match the shadows, blushes and lipsticks from each of the three sets to create a combination that works for you, plus you can choose from three different eyebrow pencils rather than the same light brown taupe that comes with the set "looks" - a plus if you have darker brows. Given the chance to customize my set, I would pick flush blush, wonderland eye shadow and prude lipstick.

As with all Reflect.com cosmetics, the textures feel great and the powders really last. At the end of the day I had minimal eye shadow creasing and most of my blush was still noticeable. The lipsticks aren't long wearing, but they are moisturizing and feel great on, and they don't cake up when you need to touch up.
