THE COSMETIC REPORT
December 8, 2000

Looking for some new makeup to fill your holiday needs? Here are some great new things I've come across lately that are worth taking a look at.

Urban Decay Red Alert! Holiday 2000 colors
Urban Decay's holiday collection is a mix of brand new shades and great favorites, all in a perky shade of red. The collection includes newcomers Tart Lip Gunk (gloss), Jezebel lipstick and Love Junkie lipstick, as well as their already popular Gash and Kiss shades in lip color, eye shadow and nail polish.

Personally I like the Lip Gunks the best. They have nice sparkle, just the right amount of shine, and a tempting apple flavor. Tart is the sheerest (a light red anyone can wear), then Kiss (a candy apple red) and Gash (a deeper metallic burgundy).

Most surprising to me are the eye shadows - they are more brown-based and sheer than I expected. Kiss is a very sheer pink with pearly shimmer, and Gash is a coppery brown-red.

If you are looking for a new take on classic red, these are definitely shades to consider. See the colors at http://www.urbandecay.com/newredalert.html.

Club Monaco Liquid Makeup ($19)
I usually have no problem ordering cosmetics online, but I lately I hesitate when it comes to foundation. My skin color has been unpredictable, looking great in the lightest of the light shades one minute and ghostly pale the next. While browsing the shades of this foundation, ranging from Beige #1-7 and Neutral #0-7, I decided to take a chance on a slightly darker-than-my-usual shade, Beige 2. Oops! Good thing I can return it, because this color is too dark for me. The only downside is that while the shade selection at Sephora seems fine, when you actually try to order, almost every shade is currently noted as "Temporary Out of Stock."

In terms of texture, to call this "liquid" makeup isn't entirely accurate, since it's really more of a lightweight cream. It feels great on the skin and has a slightly dewy, natural finish. I wish Club Monaco chose a different style of package, though, because the traditional foundation bottle makes the cream hard to get at; a wider jar or even squeeze tube would be more user-friendly.

The big pluses of this makeup are its smooth, silky texture perfect for winter-worn skin (doesn't accentuate dry areas), natural-looking coverage, and the fact that it's safe for acne-prone skin. If you can get your hands on the right shade, this is a foundation worth trying.

You can see the colors and the full ingredient list at Sephora.com.

Aesop Rosehip Seed Lip Treatment
Australian brand Aesop puts out some great products (Amazing Face Cleanser, Mandarin Face Cream), so I was excited to try this new lip treatment. Unlike a waxy balm like Chapstick, this vegan-friendly, non-greasy stick is totally botanical (no beeswax) and absorbs instantly to treat lips rather than just coat them. The thinner texture takes a little getting used to, but if you hate goopy lipbalms, you'll love this one.

Tony & Tina Herbal Mascara ($18)
Mascara choices are a dime a dozen - it seems like every time I turn around, somebody's come out with yet another version. Tony & Tina's has a nicely tapered brush so you can reach every lash easily, a non-clumping formula that defines and lengthens, and it resists flaking and smearing. You can choose from black, brown or clear (for brow grooming).

With so many brands to choose from, you may be wondering if you really need to spend $18, $20 or more on mascara that you have to throw away in 3-4 months. In a word, no, you don't. There are plenty of great mascaras at your local drugstore or supermarket that cost less and work great, like Rimmel Extra Super Lash, L'Oreal Le Grand Curl, Cover Girl Lash by Lash, and Neutrogena Full Length Defining Mascara.
