December 10, 1999
As I mentioned last week, I am getting back to reviewing more
color cosmetics, and I plan to cover some hair care, body care,
and maybe a little fragrance in the coming weeks; I just bought
Demeter's Pick-Me-Up cologne spray in Tomato and I can't wait to
tell you about it! If there is a product or a brand you'd like
to read about here or on the site, email me and we can add it to
our review list.
For this week, I've got a couple of concealer reviews and a look
at a brand new line available only on the Internet. Enjoy!
Molton Brown Cover-Up ($23) in Lumiere
As part of my online shopping reviews, I recently picked up this
product from indulge.com. The first thing that stands out about
Cover-Up just how small it is - a tiny .17 fluid ounces. I began
to wonder what my $23 was paying for... After using it a few
times, I am both pleased and disappointed. On the up side,
Cover-Up has enough pigment to really conceal, so one pump works
great as concealer for undereye circles, red spots, etc. or you
can use 2-3 pumps for your whole face. The look is natural,
light, and flawless. I found applying Cover-Up with my fingers
worked best. The downside is that I had a small breakout of
cosmetic acne in the spots where my skin is most vulnerable to
acne (forehead and chin). A quick peak at the ingredient list
reveals sodium chloride, which has definite acne-causing
potential. Since I do like the texture and coverage of
Cover-Up, I've decided to keep it and use it just for undereye
circles and as an eyeshadow base, and stick to "safer" makeup
for the rest of my face.
T. LeClerc Concealer ($19)
I seem to have a thing for foundation and concealer lately!
After having a good experience with the LeClerc powder (except
I'm still not 100% satisfied with Banane as the right color for
my skin), I was looking forward to trying their concealer in 03
Beige. Again, just like the Molton Brown product, I had a really
mixed experience. This concealer also covers well, has a nice
creamy feel, and has an easy-to-use wand applicator. You also
need VERY little so one tube should last a long time.
Unfortunately, it also has a rather comedogenic (acne-causing)
ingredient, isocetyl stearate, as the third ingredient after
water and titanium dioxide. If you are at all acne prone, this
could definitely give you some trouble if you use it to conceal
blemishes. As an undereye concealer, however, it is very nice,
and will be joining my Molton Brown Cover-Up in the "undereye
concealer" area of my makeup organizer.
Femme Cosmetics
The Internet has really opened up a world of opportunity for
anyone interested in the beauty biz, allowing more people with a
dream to start their own brands and sell them online. Femme
Cosmetics is a new kid on the block and I think is worth looking
at for reasonably priced cosmetics.
Natural Finish Flawless Foundation ($15) in "nude"
If you are looking for a natural looking liquid makeup with
medium, slightly matte coverage good for any skin type, this is
a nice choice. The color I got is a decent match for my
fair skin - not too yellow, not too pink. I also checked the
ingredients for red flags like possible acne aggrevators, and it
came up clear.
Blush ($10.50) in "moonlit mauve"
This color was a bit warmer than I expected, so on my already
rosy cheeks, it looked a little off. I think next time I would
choose "delicious" instead. This is a basic powder blush with a
soft finish and good wearability.
Shadows ($10.50) in "palest peach", "smoke", "woodland"
Like the blush, these are basic shadows that are soft and
wearable, which can be both positive and negative. The colors
are sheer and blendable, so it's hard to make a mistake, but the
lack of dense pigment makes them fade faster than a brand like
Bobbi Brown or Christian Dior. For an everyday look, these
shadows are fine, but I would choose something with more pigment
to use as powder liner or for a more dramatic look.
Lipstick ($10) in "tribal" and "irresistible"
Femme has done a great job with these lipsticks. The texture is
creamy and smooth with a nice lightweight feel that seems to
sink into the lips, so the look is almost like your lips are
naturally that color. Although there are only 12 colors, I
lucked out with "tribal", a cool berry shade, and
"irresistible", a MAC Twig style brownish pink. These and the
foundation were my favorite cosmetics of the line.
Mascara ($9)
This mascara does a great job of defining the lashes without
clumping or depositing little blobs on the ends of the lashes.
It gives a soft, natural look and doesn't flake or smear.
The Little Black Book organizer ($30)
I may be The Makeup Diva, but sometimes I still have a hard time
spending a lot of money on something I just don't think I will
use. I have felt like this about the very popular makeup
organizer/planner from Trish McEvoy - even though the idea is
great, I can't justify spending for the planner and all the
pages, and then the product to put inside. Too much! This one
from Femme is more my speed. It's the size of a Daytimer
organizer, zips completely closed, comes with a zippered pouch
"page" that velcros into the organizer, and has pockets inside
to hold up to 30 makeup brushes and plenty of cosmetics,
sponges, puffs and anything else you might need. At just $30
it's a steal! This is my favorite item from the line.
