New Year's Eve is right around the corner, so if it's party
perfect glamour you're after, this week's reviews are just for
you.
Stila Flaunt ($45)
I'm not much of a body powder user, mainly because they are
usually too perfumy for me. Flaunt is a nice change, with subtle
scents like gardenia and jasmine, and just a touch of shimmer
that looks pretty on arms, shoulders, or wherever. The packaging
is also unique - the powder comes in a standard cardboard
shaker, but there is a pretty decorative cover with one of the
Stila girls on it that fits over the top, so you're less likely
to spill powder everywhere. It also comes with a small puff that
fits under the cover.
BeneFit Kitten ($22)
Again, I'm not much for powder, but this one from BeneFit is
unique as well - the powder is contained within the puff! Kitten
comes in a pretty, vanity-appropriate, gold trimmed box with a
fluffy peach-colored puff inside, but no loose powder. The
powder is actually inside the puff, so when you pat the puff on
your skin, the powder comes out. Clever, and much less messy!
Kitten has subtle golden flecks and a feminine, floral scent.
You can find BeneFit products at benefitcosmetics.com (which
also has a list of regular store locations).
Cargo ColorTube ($24) in Dublin (peachy orange)
It seems like every brand has an all-in-one, three-in-one, or
lip/cheek color that can be used on eyes, cheeks or lips. This
one from Cargo reminds me most of Stila's All Over Shimmer -
it's a cream that comes in a tube, has a light, silky texture,
and comes in a variety of sheer and slightly shimmery shades of
pink, peach, and champagne. You can use it as eye shadow,
highlighter (for eyes or cheeks), blush, and lip color, but
personally I like it as lip color the best. The creamy texture
tends to slide into the crease of the eyelid (and you can't
really powder over it), and when worn on the cheeks, it really
works best alone without foundation or powder (tough for anyone
with less than perfect skin).
You can find Cargo products online at beauty.com and
Sephora.com
. If you prefer to shop in a "regular" store (gasp!),
Barneys in New York City, Seattle, Boston, Chicago, and Beverly
Hills carries the line as well as Sephora in San Francisco, San
Diego, New York City, and Northbrook, Illinois. If you happen to
be in Canada, Cargo (a Canadian company, by the way) is
available at The Bay in Toronto and The Sarum Room in
Unionville.
Prescriptives Magic Liquid Lotion
There have been so many articles on these new Magic products in
all the women's magazines, I practically ran to the local mall
to check it out. Magic is available as a lotion, cream (which
comes in a compact like Prescriptives' Photochrome foundation),
loose powder, line filler cream (comes in a tube like a cream
concealer), and undereye stick. Each one contains holographic
particles and is supposed to deflect light and make the skin
appear flawless. I had high hopes of it erasing all my
complexion "flaws" and eliminating the need for me to ever wear
foundation again. Well, keep dreaming! I found it to be an
over-rated highlighter and nothing more.
Magic liquid is simply a pearl-colored lotion with a bit of
shimmer (it reminds me of BeneFit High Beam). Applied under the
eyes or on cheeks, it gives a soft, shimmer effect that mimics
the dewy look seen on the fashion runways. If you are into the
dewy look and like shimmer products, try getting a sample of one
of the Magic product to see what you think. I was not able to
try the other products because all the counters I visited had
either a very limited shipment that they sold right away, or no
product yet at all. If the other products are anything like the
lotion, I'll be spending my money on something more worthwhile.
In Cosmetic News
Part of reviewing all these products involves me staying current
on what is new and exciting in the beauty industry. I learned
recently that Biore is coming out with two new products at the
beginning of the year for those of you with acne-prone skin.
Blemish Fighting Cleanser ($6.99 for 5 ounces) will be a
salicylic acid treatment cleanser designed to heal blemishes and
help prevent new breakouts. Even more exciting is their new
Blemish Bomb, a salicylic acid treatment that goes on as a gel
but dries to a clear patch that you leave on overnight. A box of
10 single-use packets will sell for $6.99. As soon as I can get
my hands on both of these, you can be sure I'll have a review
for you!
