THE COSMETIC REPORT
January 31, 1997

I was once asked by a curious reader, "How do you test so many products without your face freaking out?" I often wonder that myself! This week I tempted fate once again with my trials of Origins Liquid Crystal cleanser, Comforting Solution, and Constant Comforter cream. Although I still don't believe Origins' pitch that their products "re-train" your skin to act more "normal", I did like the products I tried and they way they made my skin feel.

Origins has four cleansers - Cream Bar, Mint Wash, Liquid Crystal, and Pure Cream. Each one is designed to simply cleanse the face and remove makeup, so the formula you choose is just based on your personal preference. The Liquid Crystal I tried has a very light texture that doesn't foam but turns into a milky liquid when you add a little water. The peppermint oil in it could be irritating to some sensitive skins, but I had no problem with it, even around my eyes. If you like something that lathers, the Mint Wash is another nice product that leaves the skin clean and comfortable (it's not really designed for very dry skin, though).

Instead of traditional toners, Origins Solutions are supposed to teach your skin cells to act more normal. I don't think so! That's really not possible, but it doesn't mean the products are bad. The Comforting Solution is basically an essential oils and aloe vera cocktail that you apply directly to your face *without* a cotton ball; instead, you pour a tiny pool of it in your palm and apply like you would a moisturizer. I actually like this technique much better than wiping it on with cotton, since you use less product, it saves cotton balls, and it just feels more refreshing.

For more information on these and other Origins products I've tried, including hair care and the Constant Comforter cream, check out Origins review page.

In other product news, for all you Garden Botanika fans, GB has just introduced a new line of home fragrances appropriately named Garden Botanika At Home. The line has everything from scented candles and room spray to hand creme and bath powder in 4 great new scents: Harbor Inn, Brownstone, Bed & Breakfast, and Guest House. Prices range from $8.50 for potpourri refresher oil to $17.50 for a package of very cool potpourri stones. This line was just introduced this week, so check your local store or the next version of the catalog (call 1-800-968-7842 to order) for more information.

Speaking of new and exciting, if you are a MAC fan like me, you are probably dying to know more about the new MAC Viva Glam 2 lipstick! Available in stores tomorrow, February 1, Viva Glam 2 is destined to be another MAC favorite. The light pink-lilac color reminds me of Wuss but with a major lilac kick! While it was a bit too light for my fair complexion, Viva Glam 2 is a good color for someone who doesn't normally wear lipstick, or for someone who just looks great in lighter colors. Testers should be available now, so go try it on for yourself!

It's the end of the month already, which means two new Cosmetic Connection Beauty Pack winners! January's lucky readers are...
