Our Beauty Cliffs’ Notes for the Fall 1998 season continues!

Lancome is a line full of autumnal surprises, from fragrance to color! O Oui is Lancome’s fresh new scent in the pretty frosted bottle. Top notes include clementine and bergamot paired with nectarine, freesia, and water hyacinth. The middle notes reveal sparkling water lily and honeysuckle, and the base notes are musky. Considerable changes are taking place in Lancome’s seasonal cosmetic offerings, largely due to the hiring of Fred Farrugia as Artistic Makeup Consultant. Farrugia’s creative talents give Lancome the creative edge they need to attract hipper, younger customers in addition to their already established clientele. The Rouge collection will be launched this September, and will encourage customers to explore the three dimensions of red: matte, gloss, and glitter. New items will include: Ombre Trio Multiple Texture Eye Color in Rouge Thermique (red shades), Rouge Organique (brown/plum shades), and Rouge Transition (silver/gray shades); Concentre Couleur Professional Eyeliner with Brush, in shades to match the eye trios; Le Crayon Khol, also in colors to match the trios; Eternicils Enduring Mascara in Rouge Thermique (deep red); Blush Duo Multiple Texture Blush in Rouge Orage (cool, deep reds) and Rouge Cyclone (warm, orange-based reds); Rouge Absolu and Rouge Idole LipColour in Rouge Thermique (red-based), Rouge Organique (plum- based), and Rouge Turbulence (brown-based); a new Lip Brio in Rouge (sheer deep red), Vernis Absolu Duos (for nails) in shades to coordinate with the lip colors; Poudre Blanc Neige Light-Reflecting Pressed Powder; Micro Paillettes Colour-Touch Glitter in Hologramme; and finally Rouge Fragrance. Lancome will also continue to promote its latest foundation, Cool Finish Versatile Coverage Makeup. This water-based, compact foundation provides medium to full coverage and is available in twelve shades. It is still not available at all Lancome counters, but hopefully will be in the future!

Estee Lauder offers many color options in their "Be Jeweled" color story. For lips, the company suggests one of the following: Antique Amethyst All Day Lipstick (a bright magenta), Bronzino True Lipstick (a shimmery brown), Rose Sapphire All Day Lipstick (muted lavender), Pure Plum True Lipstick (brown-aubergine), or Silent Red Perfect Lipstick (a true ruby). Any of these lipsticks can be topped with Brocade Perfect Sheer Effect Lipstick (a pewter shade) for added drama. Estee Lauder will also introduce Velvet Lip Sticks, pencils which can both line and color the lips. These will be available in Gilded (gold), Garnet (plum), Ruby (red), and Rose (a deep mauve). The company will again offer seasonal Perfect Finish Nail Lacquers in miniature bottles for only $5.00. This season’s offerings include Yellow Diamonds, Brocade, Rubies, and Antique Amethyst. Lauder’s fall eye looks include Two-In-One Eyeshadows in Midnight Amethyst (muted heather), Golden Ice (gold), Licorice (deep gray), and Khaki (green-brown); new Line and Smudge Eye Defining Pencils in Black, Brown, and Khaki; and More Than Mascara in Rich Black. Minute Makeup will also debut in a brand new highlight shade, Goldstick (a pretty, sheer gold, subtle enough for daytime).

Vincent Longo has developed a soft, dual-textured collection for fall called the "Satin Autumn Rhythm Collection". The collection combines matte and satin sheen textures to create an understated and chic look. On the eyes, a matte look imparts a refined appeal. Longo’s new Eyeshadow Trios in Lavender Mist (deep gray, lavender, rose), Autumn Rhythm (soft heather, muted mauve and peach), and Untitled #3 (soft brown, light beige, rosy beige) are truly beautiful and foolproof. Each color in the trio is numbered; #1 is the overall primer/highlighter, #2 is used to create a shadow in the crease, #3 is used to line the upper and lower lash lines. On the lips, Longo encourages the use of Matte Satin Lipsticks in Grace (a warm, pinky-brown), El Morocco (a warm brick red) or Suave (a cool pink-red). Colors from this collection may be mixed and matched, but if you desire a coordinated look, combine these eye and lip colors: Autumn Rhythm with El Morocco, Lavender Mist with Suave, Untitled #3 with Grace.

LORAC will be introducing rich and romantic colors in their fall collection. LORAC’s seasonal look will be defined eyes, rich nails, and muted lips. This look can be achieved using the following fall shades: Lip Tints in Red, Red Brown and Plum; Nail Polish in Shadow (pewter), Night Sky (black burgundy), and Zanzibar (shimmery mahogany); Eye Shadow in Garnet (deep, metallic garnet), Gold (rich, metallic gold), and Black; Lipsticks in Deep Purple (intense, dark purple), Jennifer (warm red with slight metallic sheen), Berry (deep berry); Lip Gloss in Gold (sheer and shimmery); Lip Pencil in 01 (dark brown) and 04 (deep burgundy); and Blush in Rose (a soft, neutral rose).

MAC plans to unveil many new colors and ideas this fall. For starters, most of their cosmetics will come packaged in newly designed containers. Many items will now have hinged flip-tops, rather than the twist-off lids, and some containers will now be metallic, rather than the matte, black plastic made famous by MAC. The fall color story from MAC is titled "Earth Goddess," and will be available in late August or Early September. While the color descriptions were shrouded in secrecy at press time, the color names have been released: for lips, the company will feature Mystic, Aura, Terra, Gleam, and Vista; for eyes, Shale, Patina, Venus, and Grain. MAC will also be introducing a brand new item - MAC Cream Colour. This item works on eyes, cheeks, and some colors may also be used on lips. The creams come in eight shades and two textures, frost and cream. The colors include Pearl (light and iridescent), Sepia (a deep brown), Dusk (a warm brown), Shell (beige-tan), Muscat (plum-brown), Root (soft, medium brown), Fresco (a peachy orange-brown), and Quartz (a red-brown). The creams can be applied with a brush, a sponge, or fingers; they are water-resistant and non-comedogenic.

Maybelline offers three new items and two new color stories for fall. True Illusion Liquid to Powder Makeup will arrive in stores in September, and promises to provide a flawless, yet natural look. The foundation will be packaged in a slim compact and will be available in fifteen shades (same shades as True Illusion Liquid). Maybelline will also launch their new Great Wear Blush. This fade-resistant cream to powder blush will come packaged in a round black compact with a sponge applicator. It will be available in eight shades: Toffee, Nude, Flesh, Hazelnut, Wood Rose, Mauve, Plum, and Wine. The final new product for fall is actually a new formulation of an existing product. Express Finish Nail Enamel will now be available in a matte formula, a collection called "Mad About Mattes". The collection will feature sixteen matte shades, all available in September. In October, the company will feature Matte Maker, a special effects top coat that delivers a matte finish to existing nail colors. Maybelline’s fall color stories are closely related. The first, titled "Gypsy Chic" features rich, plush colors. New colors include: Moisture Whip Lipstick and Express Finish Fast-Dry Nail Enamel in Plushed Plum, Indigo Chic, Tasseled Taupe, Goldlights, and Rare Ruby; Expert Eyes Trios in Indigo Chic and Tasseled Taupe; Great Wear Liner in Raisin; Brush Blush in Not So Nude and Plushed Plum; Great Wear Budge Proof Lipcolor in Maroon and Goldlights; and Salon Finish Nail Enamel in Maybe Navy and Chic Merlot. The overall look of this collection is rich and deep; Maybelline’s second color story differs a bit. The "Gypsy Chic on Ice" collection features a cool, icy palette of silvers, grays, and blues. Eyes are lined using Eye Express in Blue Chill, lids are shaded using Expert Eyes Singles in Gray Suede. Nails and Lips are accented using Express Finish Fast Dry Nail Enamel in Blue Chill and Lip Express Lipstick N’ Liner In One in Ice Angel, a chilling silver.

Trish McEvoy is not promoting a single-concept color story for fall. Instead, the company is introducing new colors into its already extensive collection. At press time, the new colors available for preview included: Glaze 104, a shimmery peachy-copper; Enhancer 4, a plummy brown; Essential Pencil 9, a shimmery peachy copper; Lip Liner 20, a peachy brown; Lipgloss in Highlights, a peachy beige; Semi-Matte Lipcolor in 15, a red brown; Lipcolors in 37, a sheer beige gold; and 157, a melon shade. For eyes, the company is promoting Glaze 151, a white shimmer; Shaper 127, a shimmery gray; and Definer 20, a matte black.

Laura Mercier is encouraging women to wear soft and refined makeup this fall. The makeup artist offers both new shades and advice on how to incorporate her already existing shades into a fall look. Her newest color story, "Escape to the Vineyards" offers three new Lip Colours: Amaretto, Port, and Merlot; and six new Eye Colours: Chambord, Margaux, Bordeaux, Rose, Cognac, and Cabernet. Although individual color descriptions were not available, the entire collection is described as containing shades of burgundy, plum, deep red, and umber brown. In addition to this color story, Mercier notes several important trends for fall. Brown is the biggest look for eyes; shades such as Walnut Shell and Ancient Oak work perfectly. Cheeks are prettily flushed using Wild Bouquet, a deep brown rose shade. Purple is an excellent accent color for both eyes (Twilight Gray) and lips (Amethyst). Finally, for lips, transparent reds, berries, and chocolate browns (like French Lips and Espresso) are most fashionable, and shine (lipgloss!) replaces the shimmery look of the past few seasons.

Origins look for fall is a colorful blend of plums, grays, and blues. The eye is lined with Plum, Clay, or Slate Shadow Stick; lids are colored with Vintage, Fog, or Blue Sage Accent Eye Shadows. A natural glow is created using Pinch Your Cheeks, lips are enhanced using Shimmer Sticks in Pearly Jam, Lucky Penny, Ginger Ale, or Go For The Bronze. For deeper color, use Lipsticks in Currant Affair, Jam Session, Off Beet, or Iced Mocha topped with Lip Gloss in Quicksand, Sheer Blackberry, or Star Search.
