How many times have you bought a foundation, a cleanser, or a cream of some kind that you just didn't like, for whatever reason. It smelled funny. It made you breakout. It burned! You waited your 8 days for those "miraculous" results and you saw nothing. For whatever reason, I am here to tell you to TAKE IT BACK! It's okay. You won't get arrested by the cosmetic police! With so many products to choose from, and with prices as high as they are, if you aren't completely satisfied with every cosmetic you buy, you have the right, and the obligation to your face, to take it back.
Now you're thinking, "Sure, Heather can take products back, but I could never do it". Not true! The only way cosmetic companies will know if their products need improvement is if we tell them, and returning something that doesn't work is one way to let them know. Here are a few tips for successful product returning:
Be friendly.
Cosmetic salespeople are people, too, so be friendly but to the point. If the product made your face break out into a million little red bumps, communicate that you are upset and see if she has any suggestions for other products, if you are still interested in that line.
Be direct.
Tell the salesperson that you want to return the product, and why. You should also be clear if you want a replacement product, a completely different product, or a full refund. It's your money, so don't let the salesperson make the decisions for you.
Be confident.
Don't let the salesperson try to convince you to keep the product if you really don't like it. Also don't fall for the "We don't accept returns" line. They need you to be happy with your purchase or you might tell all your friends never to shop there again, and they know that.
Try before you buy.
Get into the habit of asking for samples. Trying the product for free and having a reaction to it is less frustrating than paying $50-100 for a cream that gives you a rash. If the counter doesn't have pre-packaged samples, ask if they can make one up for you. Most of the department stores now have little round pillbox containers for the sole purpose of dispensing samples from the product testers so you can take some home.
Don't let one bad experience ruin your fun with cosmetics.
I have had several bad reactions to products, but you can't let that stop you from trying new things. If you get to know your face, what you are sensitive to, and what formulas typically work for you, you'll better be able to choose products that might work on your skin.
Don't forget that cosmetics are supposed to fun, and skin care is supposed to make you feel good. If you don't feel like you're getting what you paid for, TAKE IT BACK!
