This week I am pleased to bring Debbie's second installment of her popular mascara report. Enjoy!
Debbie is 40 years old and lives in sunny San Diego, California. Her skintone is light and she has combination skin, with her cheeks more on the dry side. In the past her top concerns were her dark eye circles and hyperpigmentation, but both have improved with her current skincare regime. She has been know to have up to 11 foundations at one time, but she is now down to her top 3 favorites. Her previous favorite things to try were skincare and foundations, but lately is moving more into more color like eyeshadows, lipsticks and still searching for the non-waterproof mascara that lengthens, adds volume, won't flake, smudge, and lasts all day, a tall order to fill.Have a question for Debbie? Take it away, Debbie!
Since my last mascara report I have tried quite a number of mascaras and pleased to bring you my personal findings on the following.
Maybelline Lash Expansion ($5.99)
I found this great drugstore mascara, after I finished my last report. It is non-waterproof, it separates, lengthens, thickens and stays on and it's cheap! I have bought this numerous times, which is quite something for me.
Prescriptives False Eyelashes ($17.00 from gloss.com)
While this mascara did give a plush look to my lashes I found it flaked. While some love this one, others like myself have experienced flaking. If I hadn't experienced flaking, I would have bought this one again.
Darphin ($20.00 from neimanmarcus.com)
This is a very good mascara, though a bit on the high priced side and not readily available. It was voted #1 by Health Magazine in November 2001.
It is non-waterproof, removes easily, gives nice color yet not super intense, no flaking or smearing and stays on until you remove it. It can tend to be more on the drier side in formulation - not dry, but definitely not wet.
Reflect.com ($16.00 from Reflect.com
)
This is my favorite waterproof mascara, because on me it is "perfect". It does everything for my lashes and them some. My lashes look great until I remove it. You can "design" this one yourself (check out the website
). This can be a very hard mascara to remove; I recommend jojoba oil, which not only removes mascara but it great for the skin and delicate eye area.
MAC Pro Longlash Mascara ($9.50 from gloss.com)
I had no flaking or smearing but it reminded me of my first experience with Pro Lash and my lashes looked waxy and not natural and some lashes were sticking together. I guess this formula and wand just doesn't work for me, although I know others who love it.
Shu Uemura Mascara ($27.00 from Sephora.com
)
Allure likes this "basic" mascara, but I found this to be a dry formula. There was no flaking or clumping, it separated nicely and looked extremely natural. Very light pigment to it, even after two coats. If you have beautiful lashes and only need a mascara to enhance what you have, then this might be the mascara for you, but at $27.00 you should "love" this mascara.
Clarins Pure Curl Mascara ($19.50 from gloss.com)
The wand is long and slender, very similar to Maybelline's Lash Discovery, which does a great job on the bottom lashes and corners. It does lengthen a bit and separates, but this formula is wet so you must go slowly when applying or you may get lashes that stick together. After 4 hours of wearing this mascara I had flaking and wearing. I was pretty disappointed at how this wore on me.
Helena Rubinstein Crescendo ($21.50)
Gave some lengthen, volume, but really didn't do anything for me. The color wasn't intense enough and I had to apply two coats and it was still too light on me. Again others really like this mascara, but I do not.
Helena Rubinstein Spectacular ($20.50)
Great lash lengthener, and gave my lashes a nice look. I got waterproof, as that was all they had at the time I ordered. I don't have to curl my lashes with this one, a very rare thing indeed. I would purchase this again.
Helena Rubinstein Extravagant ($21.00)
Volume-dense, great pigment, more of a dramatic look, but had some flaking. This reminds me of Lancôme's Flextencils, which you would probably have easier access to.
Helena Rubinstein Vertiginous ($20.50)
Lengthen, curls and separates. I don't curl my lashes with this mascara either and they look good! I would purchase this one again.
You can find Helena Rubinstein mascaras at Strawberrynet.com
.
Touch Cosmetics Lush Lush Mascara ($12.50 from touchcosmetics.com
This water-resistant, natural-looking mascara had no flaking or clumping, and it separates nicely, but it wasn't enough of a mascara for me. I need a more intense look versus natural. If you have great lashes, this wouldn't be a bad mascara and the price is right.
Great Skin Curling Lash Mascara ($12.00 from Greatskin.com
Curls (held look and curl all day), separates, no flaking or smudging, more of a natural lash look. I would not say it thickens like the description reads, but I would consider buying this mascara again. I bought it on sale so I saved $2 and for $10, this wasn't too bad.
And there you have it, another 13 mascaras tried and tested by one of the most picky mascara users I know. Mascara is one of those beauty items that not everyone will completely agree on, but some of us, like myself, feel the need to try them all in search of the perfect one.
Thanks, Debbie! I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
Until next time,
