THE COSMETIC REPORT
January 16, 1998

I love to keep up on new products, so this week's report is full of fun finds that deserve a spot in your bathroom or on your vanity.

Always the innovator, Avon is continuously coming out with new and useful products that really work and don't cost a fortune. One of my favorites from their newest releases is Anew Instant Eye Smoother ($16.00), a silky eye cream that makes the eye area appear smoother instantly. How does it work? Silicone-based ingredients like cyclomethicone and silica create a thin film finish on the skin that holds moisture in and temporarily makes the area look smoother. With everyday use, Anew Instant Eye Smoother keeps the eye area moisturized and looking fresh.

Another incredible find from Avon is their brand new, re-formulated Perfect Wear lipstick, now called Perfect Wear Double Performance ($6.95; introductory price $3.95). Double Performance is the latest Avon technology in transfer-resistant lipsticks. What makes this one different?

  • It actually feels smooth and moisturizing, not dry and crumbly.

  • It actually stays on!

  • The best part? You get more of it - unlike most transfer-resistant lipsticks, this one is full sized, like a regular lipstick.

With 20 versatile, long wearing colors to choose from, it's time to call your Avon rep, or visit Avon online, for a tube!

Would you call owning almost 40 tubes of lipstick an obsession? I would, and I'm guilty of it! I love lipstick, and I am always adding to my ever-growing collection of everything from classic red to neutral brown. The newest member of my lipcolor family is "nine one one" from BeneFit ($18.00; call 1-800-781-2336 for a catalog or locations). Although BeneFit sells "nine one one" as an all-over, all-in-one shade, it works best on lips, great on cheeks, but a definite no-no on eyes (unless you want that "I've been crying all night" look). Just a dab or two of this medium cinnamon mauve-brown shade on lips looks fresh, pouty, but not overly made-up. Use the enclosed sponge to blend a few dabs on your cheekbones for an instant pick-me-up. I don't leave the house without it!

It comes as no surprise to most of you that I have a "thing" about my hair. This week it was crying out for a deep conditioning treatment for its thirsty ends and all-over dryness. Alberto VO5 Hot Oil Shower Works hair treatment (around $5 at drugstores) jumped out at me at my local drugstore, so I decided to give it a try. Shower Works is different from regular VO5 - the heat of the shower makes it work, so you don't have to heat the oil yourself. One bottle contains four pre-measured treatments, so it's easy to use. The one drawback: for seriously dry hair, Shower Works doesn't quite cut it, leaving you reaching for your regular conditioner. For normal hair, in place of a weekly cream deep conditioner, Shower Works is a fine choice for an occasional moisture boost.

The Makeup Diva is In! You know about foundation, concealer, and powder, but what's the best way to apply everything so you still look like you? Look no further than this week's Ask The Makeup Diva column for handy tips for 1-2-3 makeup.

For those of you with oily skin, you're going to love this month's new Feature, "Skin Care for Oily Skin". Our newest Panelist, Alissa, offers her personal picks for effective cleansers, toners, and lotions that are just right for oily skin.
