This week I am pleased to share Debbie's latest Mascara Report. Debbie is 41 years old and lives in sunny San Diego, California. Her skintone is light and she has combination skin, with her cheeks more on the dry side. She has been know to have up to 11 foundations at one time, which makes foundations one of her obsessions and the second is always searching for the perfect non-waterproof mascara that lengthens, adds volume, won't flake, smudge, gives dark pigment and lasts all day - a tall order to fill. She currently owns more makeup than she could possibly use in her lifetime and probably about 50 lipglosses (how can one person own that many?) and still that doesn't stop her from buying more, but it's all in the name of research, right? Have a question for Debbie? Email her here.
Mascara Report - Part 3
I can only say that after a year of trying tons of mascaras and using 3-4 at a time, I am beat (phew) and there always seems to be a new one just around the corner. I personally like lengthening mascaras so I always choose that over volume when trying out a new mascara.
Max Factor Stretch & Separate ($6.99 at ULTA.com)
This surprised me and I would definitely considering purchasing this one again. It lengthens, separates nicely, has good pigment, it flakes a tiny bit but basically holds up well all day.
Rimmel Endless ($3.97 at Walmart)
Great price, great pigment, does curl the lashes without the use of a curler, gives some lengthen and would be fantastic, EXCEPT... it smears! My bottom lashes would never stay on all day!
Bourjois Longueur Sublime ($12.00 at ULTA.com
and Sephora.com
)
Gives length but no volume, the pigment wasn't bad for the first round but I needed to apply a second coat, which means this wouldn't be one of my favorites.
Helena Rubinstein Vertiginous in Navy and Purple ($22.00 at strawberrynet.com)
I like the navy the best, the purple doesn't show up enough on me, almost looks brown on me instead of purple. This is one of the best navy colored mascaras I have tried. I had reviewed this mascara previously but wanted to share for those who like navy colored mascaras. I repeat myself here but this one lengthens, curls and separates. This is another mascara that will curl my lashes without using a curler.
Prescriptives Eyelash Curler Shaping Mascara ($17.50 at gloss.com)
This is more of a natural look than Prescriptives' other choice, False Eyelashes, which adds much more to the lashes. It held up all day with tiny bit of flaking. I personally didn't care for this mascara as it didn't do much for my lashes and while I like False Eyelashes for the look it gave me, it flaked, so on to the next...
Bloom ($14.00 at Sephora.com
)
I was really disappointed with this, it did absolutely nothing for my lashes and I was so disappointed that after using it just once (!) I threw it away. One of the issues was that there was not enough pigment at all for me, making my lashes look much too light.
Yves St. Laurent Mascara Longueur Intense Lengthening ($22.50 at Nordstrom)
I got length but no volume with this mascara. It made my lashes look too skinny and works better with a primer. I had some flakes with this one. For the cost I wanted a lot more than I got.
Jane Hi-Fiber ($3.97 at Walmart)
What a gem, and you can't beat the price! Lengthens, adds a little volume, good separation. It tends to be a bit wet, so watch your application and apply slowly. I know a few had smudging with this one. For the price you can't beat it.
MAC Splashproof Lash ($9.50 at gloss.com)
It separates, lengthens, has nice pigment, and is waterproof. I like this one better than the other MAC mascaras that I have tried, but I wouldn't re-purchase; while it is nice and hits a lot of "points," it's still not a favorite for me.
Sephora Lengthening Mascara ($10.00 at Sephora.com
)
Definitely gives length but is a wetter formula than others. I had tiny flakes, slight smearing and no volume (then again it is a lengthening mascara). Some do give more volume than this one, though.
Maybelline Sky High Curves ($5.42 at Walmart)
This is the new kid on the block and is similar to Lash Expansion, which I
like more. This states that it gives length and curl the lashes, and it
does both with no curler needed, but no volume and the formula is a bit drier
than Lash Expansion. It doesn't do as much for my lashes and I will
definitely stick with Lash Expansion. I did have some tiny flakes but it
wore pretty well all day, I will give it that!
So far with ALL the mascaras I have tried over the past year, my favorites are Max Factor Stretch and Separate, Maybelline Lash Expansion and Lash Discovery (waterproof), Reflect.com
(waterproof), L'Oreal Lash Out, and Helena Rubinstein Vertiginous.
Thanks, Debbie. I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
Until next time,
