THE COSMETIC REPORT
July 28, 2000

Cosmetic Connection is on the move - literally! We have just moved our offices and I am still trying to find all my review cosmetics and product information in this pile of rubble in the middle of the floor! As soon as I find everything from my recent trip to New York City (which is why there was no newsletter last week), I will have some great reviews to share with you. Until then, I am pleased to bring you Nava's recent review of Jules & Jane skin care. Enjoy and I will be back next week with lots of juicy reviews and news!

Nava is 32 years old and lives in East Meadow, New York (on Long Island). She has fair, oily/combination skin and blonde hair. Nava did a five month course of Accutane last 2 years, so she doesn't break out (with the exception of an occasional small pimple or cluster of whiteheads) much anymore, but is still battling overactive oil glands. Nava always says she's on a constant search for hope in a jar! Nava's two greatest concerns are keeping her oily skin in check and warding off those wrinkles that she knows are forming as she gets older. For Nava, taking care of her skin is practically a full time job!

Jules & Jane is a relatively obscure brand, but word is starting to spread. It was briefly mentioned in W magazine a few months ago, and in July's InStyle. Right now, you can find the products at Beautyhabit.com and julesandjane.com, as well as in some Sephora locations.

Jules & Jane is a unique, Ayurvedic skin care line that seems truly suitable for all skin types. You don't need to figure out your dosha as with Sundari's line, so there's no confusion as to which products will work for your skin type. I tried 5 of the 7 products in the line:

Cleanser ($18 for 4 oz. bottle)
If it weren't for the clear plastic and the red & black label, you'd swear this was a bottle of Elmer's Glue! It is a pleasant, lightly foaming cleanser that effectively cleans and removes makeup, without leaving your face dry and tight. It also has a wonderful lavender scent.

Powder Wash ($16 for 2 oz. bottle)
This is a powdered compound consisting of milk powder, lemon peel, papaya, lentils, coriander, aloe and nutmeg (sounds yummy!). A tiny bit mixed in with the Cleanser gently exfoliates the skin and leaves it soft and glowing.

Tonic ($17 for 4 oz. bottle)
A very refreshing alcohol-free mist. Organic Lavender Hydrosol, aloe vera, oat beta glucan, Retinyl Palmitate and vitamin E are listed among the ingredients. It's a great pick-me-up on hot summer afternoons, as well as a follow up to the Cleanser and Powder Wash. Exercise caution if you want to carry this with you; my bottle leaked a bit in my purse.

Hydrator ($19 for 1 oz. bottle)
This is a really nice basic moisturizer. The bottle is tiny, but you only need a small amount of this rich lotion. I like to use it at night only. For my skin, it is a bit too heavy to use during the day. I would avoid this product if you're prone to breakouts - stearic acid is the third ingredient listed.

Clearing ($14 for 1.2 oz. bottle)
Add this product to your arsenal if you do battle with zits of the that-time-of-the-month variety. It contains Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Sugar Maple, orange and lemon extracts. It smells pretty awful - my husband always complains whenever I put it on at bedtime - but it really works!

In addition to the products I tried, there is also a powder mask and an aromatic massage oil. I'm thinking about trying the mask, since I was pretty impressed with the rest of the line.

Happy shopping!

-Nava
