THE COSMETIC REPORT
August 7, 1998

As I mentioned in the July 24th issue of The Cosmetic Report, MAC has new packaging and some great new colors in the works for fall. This week I am pleased to bring you a sneak peek of the color names and an online photo of the new packaging!

Called the Earth Goddess collection, MAC's colors for fall are rich earth tones that are much more wearable than past seasonal collections. Here's a sneak peek at the color names:

Lips - mystic, aura, terra, gleam, and vista
Eyes - shale, patina, venus, and grain

In conjunction with this week's Ask The Makeup Diva column (see below), I have to recommend this great new kit from Hard Candy, Training Brow ($28). Training Brow comes with two brow powder shades, a mini angled brush, mini mascara wand brush, and mini tweezers all in a small, square mirrored compact. This kit is perfect for travel and fits easily into a purse or makeup bag. The brushes are pretty small and really shouldn't replace full sized brushes for everyday use, but for travel, it's perfect. The two powder shades let you mix and match, or blend the two to create the best color for your brows. If you are a slave to your brows, this kit is a must.

Even in the summer, I always manage to get chapped lips. For those of us with the on-going problem, you can never have too many tubes of lipbalm. The folks at English Ideas, creators of Lip Last lipstick sealant, would like to add to your collection with their Lip Works lipbalms ($9 each) in "grapefruit", "tea tree oil", "hint of color", and "concealer". My favorites are grapefruit and tea tree oil, since they are more like traditional lipbalm and feel soothing and moisturizing on the lips (and they smell great!). For my cool, slightly pink undertone coloring, the "hint of color" balm was a bit on the orange side, better for someone with golden undertones in their skin. Personally, I'd pass on this, and on the "concealer", a light flesh colored stick designed to conceal and heal cold sores and blemishes around your lips. The color is not universal, so making it match with the rest of your foundation and regular concealer is a bit of a challenge. I'd stick with regular medicine and a skintone matching concealer.

I usually don't make a habit out of reviewing really "personal" personal care products, but I couldn't resist trying the new deodorant from Origins, No Offense ($11). Made with natural plant oils like winterbloom, field mint, basil, black currant, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, neroli, and vetiver, this deodorant smells sweeter and has fewer chemicals than most drugstore and supermarket brands. If you favor natural products, or if you're tired of all the pore-clogging chemicals in anti-perspirants, check out No Offense. Since it is only a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant, it does take a few weeks to get used to, but I think it's worth it.

The Makeup Diva is in! Looking for a product that fills in eyebrows without looking overly dramatic and fake? Miss Diva recommends her favorites for fast and easy brow color in this week's column.
