THE COSMETIC REPORT
August 12, 2002

Every month I like to highlight one of our Panelists and the research and reviews she's been working on. This week I'm pleased to share summer reviews from several Panelists, including R, Judith, and Marissa. Just click on each name to read more about each Panelist. Enjoy!

Stila Sport Summer Set ($50)
review by R
Stila scores well with this Sephora-exclusive set. The idea behind these multi-use products is that you can have color without lying out in the sun, or committing to a sunless tanning product. There are three products packaged in an adorable orange Stila terry cloth cosmetic case. Prior to using the limited edition four shadow summer palette, Stila was not a line that excited me, but now, I am discovering products that will definitely become makeup shelf staples.

First I tried the Color Push Up in the best selling shade, Blush Flush, which is oil free, and perfect for all skin types. This can be applied to eyes, cheeks, lips, shoulders, simply anywhere you want to add some sexy summer color. I found it to be easy to apply and blend, which is great for someone like me because it's absolutely mistake-proof. It is small enough to tote in cosmetic case, beach bag, or even a pocket for desired touches. It feels light on the skin, and allows the user to control the depth by the amount of product applied. This is definitely a product I will be using this season.

Next I used Pivotal Sun Bronzing Tint in Shade 1 which is packaged in a cute compact with a swivel lid. The product provides sheer coverage, minimizes pores (an awesome attribute), and reveals inherent dewiness. I found this product a little difficult to work with as it's not easy to blend, and it left some streaking on my face, but then again, I'm cosmetically challenged when it comes to using these tinted types of products. I did however find the coverage to be sheer, sexy, and natural, leaving my skin looking as though it was exposed to the sun. Perhaps someone with better makeup application skills would be happier with this tint.

Last I tried Color Courier in Quick Nude, my favorite of the set. A wonderful sharpener with the Stila logo etched upon it is included so sharpening this oversized pencil is a breeze. This perfect pencil can be applied to lips, eyes, and cheeks, and if I was to ever be stuck on, let's say, the show Survivor, this would be the one product I would want to have because it does the job of three products. Though the shade is Nude, it actually has some shimmer, and leaves the face looking brighter and healthier. This is definitely a product I will be carrying around all summer long. All in all, this is a set that belongs in everyone's beach bag, but please doesn't forget the umbrella, and sunscreen.

This special set is available exclusively at Sephora.com.

BlissLabs Skintwin ($35)
review by Judith
When the weather turns warmer, my makeup turns more lightweight. In the past few years, I've always worn a tinted moisturizer as my summer makeup, but this year, I've found a new lightweight moisturizer that fits the bill for a lightweight summer foundation. Skintwin by Blisslabs is a lightweight liquid foundation that applies like a lot of the newer gel foundations as it literally melts into your skin. Without feeling heavy or cakey, it's great for evening out your skintone and, best of all, it lasts all day without turning leaving a greasy or shiny face!

With an SPF of 12, Skintwin contains Vitamins A, C & E, as well as ceramides and grapeseed. Equally effect with or without additional moisturizer, this foundation is one that has become a staple in my foundation wardrobe.

Available in five colors, which are very blendable, I've been using Barely, which is the second lightest shade in the range. Call Bliss Spa at 888-243-8825 and tell the sales assistant what color you wear in other foundations. She will match you up with the shade that suits you best.

Smashbox Cosmetics Camera Ready Summer 2002
review by Marissa
I am a color cosmetic junkie so when given the opportunity to try products that I can't get at Saks or Neiman Marcus, I am on cloud nine! The products consisted of Smashing Candid Blush, Smashing Snap Shot Eye Shadow Trio, Smashing Close-up and Smashing Candid lipsticks and Smashing Flash lip pencil. These products in one word... SMASHING!

The Smashing Candid blush is a rather bright pink-looking blush that I wouldn't normally pick for myself, since it looked too pinky for me. But, was I wrong. It gave a healthy glow that didn't increase the redness in my cheeks and made me look like I didn't have blush on at all.

The eye shadow trio consists of a white, dusty rose pink and walnut colored brown, with a hint of shimmer. I wouldn't normally pick these three colors to put together, but they certainly knew what they were doing. These colors made my eyes look very natural and not made up when I put them on, the color stayed all day and didn't crease, and they layered nicely if I wanted more than the sheer color that they provided.

The two lipsticks are both pink in their base color, but Smashing Candid has a beautiful gold undertone to it that makes me feel like a model when I put it on. It's one of my newest favorite lipsticks and looks great with the tan I have. Smashing Close-Up is a pretty dusty rose pink with a lot of shimmer that never failed to get a question of what color lipstick was I wearing. My favorite product of all is the Smashing Flash lip pencil. It's hard to describe what the color is because it takes on the color of whatever lipstick you pair it with. I guess it's a coral, pinky shimmery color that is beautiful on its own with a clear lip gloss over it. It goes on smooth, and sharpens nicely. (Sometimes lip pencils seem to go to pot when you try to sharpen them; this didn't.) Yes, I've used it so often, that I needed to sharpen it after only a few weeks.

If you've never tried Smashbox, you can purchase their products through their website Smashbox.com, or try QVC where you can order products when Smashbox presents live or from their website.

Thanks R, Judith and Marissa for your terrific summer reviews! I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
