This week I am pleased to share a new collection of reviews from our Panelist Judith. Enjoy, and happy shopping!
Judith, 56, lives in Washington, DC, where she works part time in the advertising department of a major newspaper, runs an online jewelry business, as well as a major mailing list and web site for art quilters on the WWW. A natural blonde until she reached her 40's, her dark blonde hair is cropped short and highlighted. She has brown eyes and sensitive/normal to dry fair skin with yellow undertones. Makeup concerns vary from season to season in Washington, as the weather goes from one extreme to the other. Judith prefers a liquid, cream or gel foundation with sheer to medium coverage and never leaves home without foundation, blush, mascara and lipstick. Her main skin care concerns are fine lines and uneven skin tones and she is always in search of a perfect new product! Have a question for Judith? Email her here.
And now for Judith's reviews!
Several Cosmetic Connection readers have written to me asking for suggestions about different products. I thought I'd share my latest finds with all of you!
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock
I'm always on the lookout for a perfect SPF cream to use under my makeup. Last year the favorite in my arsenal was Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 30. Neutrogena now has another product that is just as good or even better, depending upon how you like your SPF cream to perform. While Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer is actually a moisturizer which contains broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock is not a moisturizer, but a sunscreen offering advanced broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection that truly feels dry upon the skin, while containing anti-oxidant vitamins A, C, and E to protect the skin against environmental damage. While performing perfectly as a sun screen, you can not feel it at all on your skin - it really goes on that dry! This is great when you want to use a makeup primer and a foundation. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like too many layers on my face! You can't go wrong with price of either of these products. Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 is available tinted or untinted for $11.99, while Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock comes with SPF of either 30 or 45 and is $8.99. Both products are available at your local pharmacy or discount store or online at drugstore.com.
Laura Geller Spackle ($38.50)
I've reviewed several makeup primers before, but this one is different! Not actually a moisturizer, you use it with your moisturizer and it leaves a perfectly smooth canvas on which you can apply your foundation. I love this stuff and have used it for the past several months. In hot humid weather, a thin coat of Spackle under tinted moisturizer can carry me through the day. Try it, you'll like it! Spackle is available at laurageller.com and on QVC at qvc.com.
Shiseido The Makeup Pre-Makeup Cream SPF 15 Sunscreen ($25.50)
Another makeup primer, but this is different from Laura Geller's Spackle. It's a combo makeup primer and moisturizer and it contains an SPF of 15. Containing a fine light diffusing powder, that neat thing about it is that it leaves a perfectly matte finish and doesn't make your makeup shine as some underbases can do.
Shiseido The Skincare Essential Tinted Moisturizer ($30)
I've had many requests for a good tinted moisturizer and Shiseido The Skincare Essential Tinted Moisturizer is my hands-down favorite. Sheer, but without a shiny finish, this is what tinted moisturizer should be! It refines your complexion and is completely natural looking. I've worn it all summer and love it! Available in three shades, #1, #2 and #3, #1 is perfect for fair and medium-light skintones. Shiseido products are available online at neobeauty.com. You can find Shiseido at most major department stores or order their products from the Nordstrom Beauty Line at 1-800-7BEAUTY.
Make Under Eye Transformer
The product that I am asked the most about by Cosmetic Connection readers is under eye concealer! I must admit, that while I've tried many, I've never found one that I liked well enough to use every day. (Most of the time, I don't even remember to use it until I've already applied my foundation, which tells you how high concealer falls on my list of things to use on my face!) Well, while visiting "Beauty-by-the-Sea", a cosmetic/skincare boutique on the island of Nantucket, MA, I finally found a product that I am pleased to recommend to you. Make Under Eye Transformer is a lightweight cream that can be used as a base for your undereye concealer or for your eye shadow. For my purposes, a little applied under my eyes without benefit of any other concealer was all I needed! It produces a silky smooth surface and doesn't give you white rings or feathered creases around your eyes! I love this stuff! It's $20 at Beauty by the Sea, Nantucket, MA, 508-228-1771 or 1-888-BBS-1771 or online at David Nicholas, Makeup Artist (makeupdni.com).
As I've written before, I am a lipstick junkie! I absolutely love lipstick and will try almost anything. When I read about Vasanti lipstick in Allure magazine a couple of months ago, I was prompted to check out their website. I'm glad I did! With slightly yellow undertones to my skin, many lipsticks are too blue toned for me and if they are not blue-toned in the tube, they change color after I apply them. Vasanti is a Canadian makeup line, founded by three Southern Asian women, dedicated to providing products to those with yellow-based skin. Their lipstick line is superb! All of the colors are very natural and the textures are divine.
My favorite colors are Belgium, a very natural light brown and Peru, a neutral beige with a touch of pink, both of these are in a "silky" formulation which is sheer, but still gives excellent color and coverage. I also really like Jordan (this is the lipstick described in Allure magazine), a perfectly neutral brown beige that looks good with all skin tones and comes in a cream formula. Also available, and definitely worth trying, is a Tinted Lip Balm, which gives excellent coverage and beautifully sheer color. I chose St. Lucia, a guava flavored neutral beige. Conquer is a 3-in-1 product designed to be a combo lip balm (it's full of Vitamin E and wonderfully emollient) and clear lip gloss. Applied over your lipstick, it's also great for removing every trace of color from your mouth!
There are many more products available on Vasanti's website, including a beautiful palette of eye shadow, blush and foundation. I hope to try some of these in the future and report back to you about them.
Vasanti's prices are quite reasonable, as all products are $12 and available from Vasanti's website at vasanticosmetics.com. I opted for the Premium/Express shipping - it's only $2-$3 more than regular shipping - and my package arrived in just a few days. (Standard shipping from Canada is much slower and will take 4-6 weeks!)
Benefit Dandelion ($26)
Benefit has a winner with Dandelion powder blush. While I'm a cream and gel blush devotee in cold weather, in warm weather, I do much better with a power blush over my tinted moisturizer. Benefit's Dandelion is a one-color-fits-all ballerina-pink powder blush that adds just the right amount of oomph to your complexion without looking overdone. It's a neutral shade that will look good on most skin tones. Housed in a nifty little green box, it's brush fits right inside and is the perfect size to give you a perfect swipe of color. I've been using this for months and highly recommend it. Dandelion is available at benefitcosmetics.com or Sephora.com.
Thanks, Judith. I hope you enjoyed this issue of The Cosmetic Report!
Until next time,
