THE COSMETIC REPORT
October 9, 1998

I get dozens of questions every week from readers like you asking about foundation - what are the best brands, colors, formulas for every skin type and beauty concern you can think of. I've tried more brands than I can count, and I know there are even more out there that deserve a look. Over the next few weeks, I plan to bring you a review or two every issue of a new or especially worthwhile foundation (and hopefully even some to avoid).

There have been quite a few new arrivals in the cream-to-powder category of foundation over the last year or so, and I always look forward to seeing what's next. Prescriptives has finally jumped on the bandwagon with their new Photochrome Light Adjusting Compact Makeup ($35), and I am pleased to say it is one worth trying.

Many cream-to-powder brands go from one extreme to the other - too dry or too creamy, too powdery or too greasy, too oil-control or too moisturizing - but Photochrome is really the happy medium. It's lightweight, oil-free (no plant, animal, or mineral oil), has medium to full coverage that still looks natural, SPF 15 (titanium dioxide), and it's transfer resistant to look great all day. The Prescriptives' salesperson I spoke to recommends Photochrome for people with normal or normal-to-dry skin, but with winter just around the corner, I imagine those of you with combination skin or a very slight oily tendency might like it, too.

Personally, I love that it covers "flaws" well while still looking fresh and skin-like, and it doesn't accentuate dry areas. I also found it also doesn't aggravate acne or cause new breakouts like many creamy foundations can. My one and only gripe with this product is that it is not refillable, meaning you have to spend $35 every time you run out. Like many cream-to-powder formulas like Vincent Longo Water Canvas and Shiseido Liquid Compact, Photochrome comes in a locking compact to keep the product moist and fresh. It would be nice if you could refill the same compact. Overall, I've been really happy with it and would definitely buy my "warm vellum" shade again.

Although my review last week of Estee Lauder's Smoothing Cream Concealer was less than favorable, this week I was pleased to discover their Uncircle Concealer SPF 20 ($16) to be much better. For dark undereye circles, the yellow-based colors and slightly thick texture really work to cover without looking heavy or cakey. You can look well-rested and ready for your day in no time, even if you don't feel very perky! Apply it with gentle, dabbing strokes just to the dark areas with a small makeup brush (I use Philosophy's lip brush) for the best results.

Back in the March 27th issue of The Cosmetic Report, I brought you a review of a new and unusual roll-on fragrance line called smell THIS. Their collection of unique smells like "cut grass", "clean wet laundry", and "beach smells" take the idea of perfume to a new and (thankfully) different level. If you tried them and loved them as much as I did, you can now indulge in shower gels and body lotions ($14 each, 8 ounce bottles) in four of their irresistible scents: "canned peaches", "cake batter", "salon shampoo", and "soda pop fizz". Not only are the smells fantastic, but the bottles themselves are fun and unique - they look like giant glue bottles! Check out these yummy lotions and potions along with the complete smell THIS line at http://www.smellthis.com.

I'm always glad to hear that our product reviews make your shopping easier, so this week we've added several new ones to our Product Reviews page on Cosmetic Connection. You'll find Mary Kay's new lineup for fall, an addition to Elaine's look at Decleor skin care, and Alissa's new review of Freeman Skin+ vitamin C skin care line.

Are you pregnant, thinking about getting pregnant, or know someone who is? I've gotten quite a few email from moms-to-be like myself, so this month I am thrilled to offer you a collection of product reviews on all the skin care goodies for this wonderful time in your life. From cooling leg gels to moisturizing belly creams, I've got a little something for all the beauty challenges you'll be facing. Stop by today!
