Just call me Nature Girl
I love trying new products that speak to my inner flower child, and these new goodies from Nature Girl and Rich Hippie definitely fit the bill. Nature Girl Nature Groupie Organic Aloe Vera Body Wash ($32 for 8.5oz) has gentle cleansers and "wildcrafted" essential oils, so you get a body wash that smells great, lathers nicely, but doesn't strip or dry out your skin. I have Rose Ylang Ylang, and it also comes in Rosemary Mint, Chamomile Bergamot, Vanilla Patchouli and Lavender Grapefruit.
For after bath or shower, or whenever the need strikes, Nature Girl offers Flower Power Botanical Body Lotion ($35 for 8.5oz) in Neroli, Sage or Rose. This ia a rich lotion with organic vegetable oils, organic aloe vera, and organic and wildcrafted essential oils and herbs. I have Neroli, which smells earthy and exotic but thankfully not overpowering.
My personal favorite is Rich Hippie Organic Perfume ($85 for .5oz) in Bliss, a sultry blend of floral and citrus. I have to be careful not to bowl people over with my perfuminess as I can get easily carried away with over-dabbing. If other scent combinations interest you, Rich Hippie comes in 14 other blends including Bohemian Wedding, Devotion, Rock Star and The Kiss, to name a few. I think I'll be trying the namesake, Rich Hippie, next.

If you love mineral makeup, here is a new one to try
Whenever I have a disappointing liquid foundation experience, I remind myself that I shouldn't stray from what works: minerals. They are easy to use, breathable, long-wearing and natural. While there are quite a few brands to choose from, they are definitely not all the same. Some are too shiny, some too cakey, some don't blend smoothly, but I am happy to report that I've tried a great new brand that delivers on all the positive aspects of mineral makeup. Made right here in Portland, Oregon, this new line, called Alima Cosmetics, was created by Kate O'Brien while trying to find makeup for her daughter that she would feel good about using. I had the pleasure of meeting Kate at a recent Crave party here in Portland, and I have since tried several of her products with great results.
Satin Matte Foundation ($17.95)
When you try this foundation in one of Alima's 41 shades, I swear, you can't believe that it looks so good for such an amazing price. Kate has blended shades for every skin tone in cool, neutral and warm choices, so I can't imagine not finding the right color for your skin. In the winter now I am using Chiffon, a very light neutral, and I've been applying it with a big, fluffy brush. The coverage is natural, like your own skin, but more even, and if I need to cover any trouble spots I either dust on another light layer or spot-apply with my finger or a small brush. I also use the brush after I've applied the minerals to dust over my blush so it looks more seamless. The coverage lasts all day, doesn't make me breakout or look dry or flaky, and my skin has a natural glow that looks healthy, not shiny or sparkly.
Luminous Shimmer Blush ($14)
I chose the shimmer blush over the matte one Alima offers because I like a bit of sheen on my cheeks. I wear the Aurora shade, a lovely light rose pink; I think it gives my fair complexion a natural-looking flush. Since the minerals are long wearing but still natural, I dust on a light layer, blend the edges out with a clean brush, and it lasts all day.
Nourishing Lipbalm ($6.50)
This is by far my most favorite tinted lipbalm, and I think my favorite Alima product. I just can't say enough good things about it! Of the 14 shades to choose from, I have Garnet, a gorgeous cool-toned berry-red shade. I love it because it has the perfect amount of color, I can swipe it on without looking in the mirror (great for those of us who can't color in the lines!), it is supple and emollient without being goopy or sticky, and it really is moisturizing, so you get a nice lip treatment and beautiful color all in one. Oh, and don't even get me started about the price! At just $6.50 a tube, you could easily splurge on all your favorite shades and not feel the slightest bit guilty :)
Luminous Shimmer Eye Shadow ($8.50)
On days when I want a little more polish, I've been using this loose powder shadow in Mink, a rosey light brown shade. Just a dab on a fluffy brush looks pretty on the lids, with just the right hint of shimmer. I also have Black Orchid but because it is darker, I save it for lining or for going out. For even more punch, I also have Alima's Pearl Luster Eye Shadow in Silk, which has a bit more shimmer so it's a nice highlighter for the browbone or as a light layer over the other shadows to add sheen. All of these shadows wear well, don't crease, and blend easily.
If you are looking for something new to try, Alima is a great new line that I definitely recommend. Tell Kate I said "hi" if you email her!
