Ah, fall! Some anticipate the brisk air, others the vibrantly colored leaves, but the true beauty aficionado eagerly awaits something far more exciting - the arrival of the fall cosmetic collections.

This fall offers new products, colors, and trends for every woman, from the high maintenance glamour diva to the fresh scrubbed crunchy granola girl. Many cosmetic companies are choosing to promote several looks (usually one dramatic, one pseudo-natural) in an effort to market to the widest possible variety of customers.

Most lines are not promoting looks which require the purchase of all new products. Companies are wisely introducing unique key items which will update a woman’s everyday look.

Although the number of new products and colors can be overwhelming, the savvy customer will research her options prior to visiting the counters. Consider this report your Beauty Cliffs’ Notes for the Fall 1998 season!

Almay offers two new items this fall, One Coat Lipcolor and Amazing Lasting Sheer Makeup. One Coat Lipcolor is already available and comes in thirty shades. The main strength of this lipcolor is that its creamy color glides on in just one coat and stays put for hours. Amazing Lasting Sheer Makeup will be available in September. This is a waterproof, long-lasting, natural foundation available in ten shades. It will come packaged in an opaque tube, similar to the one used for the Revlon Even Out Foundation. In addition to the two new products, Almay will also be promoting a fall color collection called "Amazing Wines". The collection is organized into three color groups: soft, sparkling wines for blondes, rich, full-bodied wines for brunettes, and warm, earthy wines for auburns. Eyeshadow colors from this collection are soft and slightly shimmery shades of amethyst, shell and taupe. Lip colors are, of course, wine-based; and cheeks are touched with the natural pink of Amazing Lasting Blush in healthy shimmer.

Elizabeth Arden will be offering new products in fragrance, skincare, and makeup this fall. Splendor, their newest fragrance will debut on September 15, and is described as a shimmering floral featuring enticing sweet pea as its signature top note. The fragrance will be elegantly packaged in a delicately fluted glass bottle. In the category of skincare, Arden is boarding the Biore wagon and introducing pore cleansing strips. Visible Difference Pore-Fix C will be available in August, and offers users the cleansing benefits of pore strips with the added bonus of vitamin C, which is believed to eliminate blemish-causing free radicals, improve the complexion, and prevent future breakouts. The strips will be sold in ten-packs, which will include seven nose strips, two chin strips, and one forehead strip. Arden will also introduce a brand-new mascara this fall. Natural Volume Mascara boasts "revolutionary mixing technology". According to the company, "A patented mixing mechanism (contained within the tube) keeps the formula clump free and creamy through multiple applications." Finally, Elizabeth Arden will be promoting their fall color story, "Simply Sumptuous". This collection includes a few limited edition items for fall: two new Eyeshadow Duo colors, Golden (a silky camel) and Velvet (a smoky plum); a new Exceptional Lipstick in Ruby (a vibrant fuschia), a Liptalker in Sherry (a varnished, shimmery red); and a new Cheekcolor in Rosy (a plummed rose).

BeneFit will be featuring some of their already successful items, like cream eyeshadows, lipsticks, and lip glosses, in rich, vibrant, jewel tones. New lipstick colors include Reel Me Rhonda (a deep, sheer grape), Rockin’ Betty (also a deep, sheer purple, but with less brown), Ruby Vibes (a sheer, pinky-red), and Bag Me Baby (a sheer copper). Cream Eyeshadow colors include Fantasy Trip (a rich purple), Nina’s Nugget (a shimmery gold), and Ocean Motion (a deep royal blue). Tube lipgloss will be available in the new shade Jelly (a beautiful plummy brown).

Bobbi Brown offers many new options for her fans this fall! Her new Gentle Foaming Cleanser is oil-free, soap-free, and formulated to match the Ph of skin. It contains cucumber extract to soothe and calm the skin, and Witch Hazel to gently tone the skin. The company will also introduce a new Conditioning Brush Cleanser which will (obviously) cleanse and condition makeup brushes effectively. The brush cleanser will be lightly scented with a hint of peppermint. Bobbi will also be launching a Conditioning Hand and Cuticle Balm this fall; the orange-scented balm will soften hands, hydrate cuticles, and build healthy nails. Now for the cosmetics... two new shades of lip pencil will be introduced, Tawny (will coordinate with BB lipsticks in Nude, Sandwash Pink, Brown, and Toasted Pink) and Plum (will coordinate with BB lipsticks in Soft Rose, Wine, and Nude). Fresh Glow Cream Foundation will also be introduced this fall. This foundation is packaged in a jar and offers a fresh, dewy appearance and medium coverage. It will contain vitamin A, to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and polymers, to provide ease of application and blendability. Other new lip and nail colors will also be incorporated into the line: Lip Glosses in White Sugar, Sand Sugar, Rose Sugar, and Cocoa Sugar; Mango and Wine Lipsticks, and Nail Wash Opaques in Nude, Red, Raisin, Rose, and Wine. Bobbi is also encouraging the fresh rosy-cheeked look this season. She recommends her newest Blush shade, Pale Pink, to achieve this glow.

Chanel, as always, will be launching a beautiful and innovative color story in addition to a few new items. Fall launches include two new mascaras, Sculpte Cils Sculpting Mascara Extreme Length and Sculpting Mascara Extreme Length-Fine Lashes (both will contain a formula which will dramatically lengthen lashes, only the brush will differ); Tient Lift Éclat Essential Firming Makeup (a sheer, weightless foundation which will provide significant firming effects to the skin); Source Extreme Dual Benefit Complex (an anti-dryness/anti-wrinkle cream); Blush Levres Lip Blush (touted as "lingerie for the lips," this lip color will come packaged in a sleek compact ,will provide luxurious, yet subtle color, and will be available in four shades: Bizarre, Innocent, Kissed, Pout); Sculpte Sourcils Sculpting Brow Pencil (will provide the convenience of a pencil, the look of a powder); and Base Protective Base Coat (will protect nails and prevent color from yellowing). Chanel’s newest color story , "Temptress," incorporates many of these new items. For eyes, brows are filled in with the Sculpting Brow Pencil, lids are vividly colored with Jade, Cider, Topaz, and Golden from the Quadra Shadow Mysteres, eyes are lined with Double Effect Eye Pencil in Brandy and smudged with Shadow/Liner Brush #4. Lashes are, of course, emphasized using the new Sculpting Mascara Extreme Length in Black or Bronze. Glowing cheeks are cosmetically created using Powder Blush in Flame; lips are lined with Precision Lip Definer in Java and shaded with Lip Blush in Pout. Nails are artfully painted with Sorceress polish.

Hard Candy will truly emerge as a line to be reckoned with this fall, with the introduction of several totally new items. For starters, the company will launch its very first foundation product, a tinted moisturizer called Hint Tint. This item will be packaged in a sleek aluminum cylinder and will come in three shades: Angel (light), Sugar (medium), and Luscious (dark). Inspired by the success of the eyeshadow quads, Hard Candy will offer Lip Sync Lip Color Compacts beginning this fall. The kits will be available in three color schemes: Luscious (reds), Metro (purples), and Digital (browns). All kits will include several colors and textures (gloss, cream, metallic), allowing for endless combinations. A new concealer, Twosome, will also be added to the line. The double-ended concealer will provide undereye concealer on one end and medicated blemish concealer on the other. Two shades will be available: Angel (light/medium) and Sugar (medium/dark). Finally, Hard Candy’s Eye Shadow Quartet Compacts and nail polishes will be available in updated fall colors. New eye quads will include Girlie (greens), Wallflower (browns), and hypnotic (purples); new polish colors will include Hype (metallic mocha brown), Normal (deep burgundy), and Melt (neutral, sheer glitter).
