JULY 98: MAKEUP FOR OILY SKIN
A Test-Drive from our Panelist, Alissa

I have been to the (foundation's) edge. It was not always a smooth, flawless journey. I encountered many distractions on the road, including masked faces that changed color. I bought, blended, and beautified. Here is what my objectives were in recommending a foundation and powder:

  1. No cakiness
  2. No mask like coverage
  3. No color changes, i.e turning orangey.
  4. Comfort
I didn't judge on longevity unless a brand touted that as a feature. So, with that in mind here is the good, the bad and the ugly on foundations and powders for adult oily skin.

Foundations

Garden Botanika Oil free Foundation (1oz., $10.00)
I am a big fan of many Garden Botanika products but this foundation will not be one of them. While this foundation is oil free, it does leave a bit of a sheen on the skin. The color turned orangey on my skin and left me feeling like I was wearing a mask. I would not recommend this product.

Avon Perfect Wear Foundation (1 oz., $8.95)
I really like Avon's Perfect Wear line including the lipsticks and lip liners but the this foundation was bad. I felt like I was putting spackle on my face. It dried so quickly I did not have time to blend it into my skin. Also, Perfect Wear is not as long wearing as it claims to be. This is not a foundation you want to wear on a sunny, hot day unless you like looking like half your make up is off your face.

Origins Original Skin More Coverage (1 oz., $14.50)
Origins is a confusing line for those of us who have oily skin because most of their products contain some type of oil. But I decided to give this product a try. I really liked the texture of the Original Skin and it was easy to blend. The More Coverage was applicable because it did look like I had more coverage. However, if you are looking for lasting coverage (more than 8 hours), forget it. Even though the product is not meant to be a long wearing product, it disappears before the end of the day. I would only recommend this product if you want to wear makeup for a few hours, otherwise pass it up.

Aveda Compact Dual Foundation (the foundation itself, $19.75; the compact, $12.50)
I love this product! This powder from Aveda can be worn wet or dry (I prefer wet). The coverage can vary depending on how you apply it. You may want to use a toner to wet the sponge. The coverage lasts longer and looks more natural using a toner than water. I felt like my skin was fresh and not heavily made up. This Aveda product is a bit pricey but I would recommend it if you are looking for a good foundation with light coverage.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup (1 oz., $27.50)
The good news is that this foundation is oil free and lasts for 12 hours and can last through various activities. The bad news is that this foundation is heavy, masky and fake looking. Also, I had to wash my face twice plus use a toner to remove this foundation. Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup seems better suited as an "out all night" foundation. I can't recommend this foundation for daily use.

Maybelline True Illusion Makeup (1.15 oz., $4.99)
I loved this foundation! True Illusion really lives up to its name. It is oil free and the color I used (True Cameo) perfectly matched my skin. There is also an SPF 10 to boot. However, I would not use a moisturizer with this foundation. When I used an oil free moisturizer, the foundation was harder to apply and did not look as natural. Skip the moisturizer and True Illusion will make you a true believer in natural looking foundation.

Cover Girl Fresh Complexion Oil Control Makeup (1 oz., $3.95)
I haven't used Cover Girl products since high school, so I thought I would try to re-live the days of my youth by trying this product. Fresh Complexion is actually a decent foundation. It has a great texture, blended easily and did keep the oil under control. The only drawback, for some of you, may be the fragrance, otherwise consider giving Cover Girl another look.

Powders

Origins Powder (powder itself $13.50, compact $4.00, puff $3.50)
This powder from Origins is average. It is a little bit too cakey and powdery for my skin. However, I did like the puff that I purchased separately. It is a good sized puff that is soft and good to use for other powders.

Garden Botanika Pressed Powder (.42 oz., $10.00)
Again, I will have to give the thumbs down to this product from Garden Botanika. The pressed powder is extremely chalky and the range of colors is very limiting, either too dark or too light. Skip this powder.

Estee Lauder Demi Matte Oil Free Loose Powder (1.1 oz., $21.00)
Airy and light to the face, just what a powder should be like. Demi Matte was non-cakey which I loved. I would definitely recommend this powder for those of you who like a loose powder.

Estee Lauder Double Matte Oil Control Pressed Powder (.49 oz., $17.50)
Double Matte was way too heavy for a powder. When using this powder with a foundation I ended up looking cakey and like I was trying to fake a tan. It is oil free and non acnegenic but I still would not recommend this powder.

Clinique Stay Matte Sheer Pressed Powder (.27 oz., $14.50)
Stay Matte Powder is a truly great pressed powder. Besides being oil free, Stay Matte works with many foundations (especially with True Illusion). I liked that it was non-powdery and light. Stay Buff was a good neutral shade that matched my skin exactly. I would recommend Stay Matte for women who are looking for a good oil free pressed powder.
