Models Prefer Color Collection
report by Deanna of the Cosmetic Connection Product Panel
As many of you know, I am a QVC cosmetics shopper, as well as a department store, boutique, "As seen on TV" and online shopper. A few weeks ago, I wrote a review on the Models Prefer cosmetics line, available exclusively through QVC. As I mentioned in that review, I had purchased several other products from that line. Here are my opinions of those products.
"Back to Basics" Eyeshadow Trios ($19.12 plus shipping and handling)
This product is a collection of three powder eyeshadows packaged in a pretty, plastic, silver compact. They are available in "Browns" and "Grays." I purchased both colors collections. Each compact contains three colors, a highlight, an all-over lid color and a crease color. The "Brown" collection's highlight is a beige tone with a hint of pink, the lid color is a taupe-brown and the crease color is a dark rust-brown. The "Gray" collection's highlight is a white tone with a gray undertone, the lid color is a "gray flannel" and the crease color is an ink-black. Personally, I loved these eyeshadows. They are well pigmented and they have great staying powder, even on my oily skin. The neutral colors are very easy to "glam" up for eveningwear or fine for ""professional" day wear. These shadows can be used wet or dry and as eyeliners with the appropriate application techniques. The colors are very true. Also, there are no "ashy" tones to these eyeshadows, so I feel confident in recommending these shadows for all women, including women of color, however, the "Browns" collection may be a little light in intensity for darker women of color. Personally, I would compare the quality of these shadows with Bobbi Brown, and in fact, I found the colors to be fairly similar to many in Bobbi Brown's line but without the Bobbi Brown price tag.
3pc Monochromatic Eye Collection in Fall Fashion Colors ($19.50 plus S/H)
This product is a collection of three "cream to powder" eyeshadows. The colors are "Backstage Burgundy", a burgundy-wine color, "Glamour Green" a bright olive-green color and "Snapshot Slate", a navy gray color. All of these shadows have a hint of shimmer to them. The packaging of these shadows is very interesting. They are like little silver pens with a "color pot" at the end. The color is "charged" to the sponge tip applicator by replacing the pen into the little "color pot". This is a great idea for women on the go because the packaging is very small and slim, however, because these products are applied to the eye and then replaced into the "color pot." Because of this, I would personally treat these products as I do mascara and discard them after about three months of use. Initially, my first reaction when I saw the colors was "YUCK," however, after applying the shadows, I found the colors to be surprisingly complementary to my skin tone and I think they would look great on just about anyone. The drawbacks: these shadows are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to blend. There is a great deal of "drag" on the eyelid even when used over eye cream and an eye base. Not what I want to deal with at all. However, the colors do have great staying powder and definitely do "stay-put" without creasing for about 6-8 hours.
Brick N' Bronze 3 in 1 pencils for Eyes, Cheeks and Lips Spring and Summer Shimmer ($19.25 plus S/H)
These products are essentially two pencils that can be used as eyeshadow, blush or lipliner and lipstick. The "Brick" is a shimmery, peach-brown color and the "Bronze" is a shimmery, taupe-brown color. Like much of the Models Prefer collection, I think that these colors would complement just about any skin tone and are very neutral. There is some drag on the skin when using these pencils, however, not as much drag as there is with the monochromatic eye collection. Also, these pencils do contain ascorbyl palmitate and bismuth oxychloride, both comedogenic ingredients, so the acne prone may not want to use these pencils as a blush, although I've had no problems using these pencils as eyeshadow or as lipliners/lip color. Personally, I really like the peach color and even though the products are shimmery, I don't find that they age my eyes at all. Again, this is a great product for women on the go because the products are so small and portable. As eyeshadows, the products have great staying power, as lipsticks, they last well, but reapplication is necessary about halfway through the day.
Lip Shaping Automatic Liner with Brush ($16.75)
These are two lipliners, one in "Catwalk Caramel", a warm, brown-red and "Model Mocha," a warm taupe-brown color. Both of these liners are automatic, in that they require no sharpening, and are very neutral in color. They would complement just about any lipstick color choice. The liners also have a lipstick brush at one end, making this another useful and portable product for women on the go.
All Over Glamour Sticks ($27.50)
This product contains two "luminizers," one is silver and one is gold. These products also contain a SPF 15 sunscreen. There is a great deal of product for the price and I have found that the "hint of shimmer" provided by these products to be invaluable for evenings out. I prefer the gold, however, my younger sisters prefer the silver and I always have to "track down" the silver color when my sisters come to visit! I would recommend these sticks to anyone who likes a "bit of glitz" for day or evening and I find them to be reasonably priced for the amount of product you get.
Overall, I am still very impressed with the Models Prefer line, even though I have found one product in the line that I really didn't like. For those who would like to try the Models Prefer line, but don't want to make a huge investment, I'd like to suggest the Models Prefer Makeup-on-the-Go Kit. This bag contains a "2 in 1 eyeshadow pen," (the same formulation as the Monochromatic Color Collection), an eyeliner pencil (Black Beauty), mascara (Black), a lip liner pencil (Studio Spice, similar to MAC spice) a "flow through lipstick" (a peachy-rose color, the packaging is similar to the Lancôme or Chanel packaging where you dial the color up through a brush) and a blush/bronzer in Backstage Burgundy (a brown-rose color). The bag is great and it comes with a great pencil sharpener that fits over the fingers without ruining your manicure. It is priced a little over $30 dollars plus shipping/handling and is a great way to try this brand of cosmetics. This line will be back on QVC on October 4th, 1999 and approximately every 45 days after that if your interested in watching the presentations or these products can be purchased anytime through qvc.com. Happy Shopping!
