Rimmel Cosmetics
report by Annie of the Cosmetic Connection Product Panel

Being rather a cosmetics snob, I approached Rimmel products - available only at Wal-Mart - with great apprehension. I'm so ashamed! It turns out that these are good products at incredibly low prices. So low that for about $40 I bought foundation, 2 lipsticks, 1 lip pencil, 2 eyeliner pencils, mascara, a powder blush, 2 nail polishes, and 7 (yes, 7) eye shadows! What fun...I tried several colors just out of curiosity, some worked and some I'll give to a make-up mad teenage friend.

Light Finish Foundation ($2.97)
Of the two liquid foundations in Rimmel's line, I chose the most sheer. There were no testers available so I took a chance and bought Soft Beige. Good choice. The color matches perfectly, goes on smoothly, and provides enough coverage to even out my skin tones - which is all I want in a foundation for summer. Coverage lasts all day with only a pat with an oil-blotting tissue on my nose by afternoon. (I wore a mattifying moisturizer under it because I have combination/oily skin and this product says it's for normal to dry skin.) The only negative I can see with this product is the lack of sun-block. But if your moisturizer has sun block, then you're good to go!

Blush ($1.97)
I chose this product in Santa Rose, a nice browny-rose color that is a very good match to my favorite Origins blush - and a fraction of the price! Rimmel Blush goes on smoothly, doesn't streak and stays on all day. I don't have the time or the energy to do much but touch up my lipstick during the day, so blush has to go on and be there! In my opinion, this one performed as well as the expensive ones I've used.

SpecialEyes Eyeliner Pencil ($1.97)
For years I've sworn by Lancome eyeliner pencils ($16.50). They are just the right softness to smudge nicely, they stay on all day and the pencils last forever. (And I wear eyeliner every day!) Rimmel's pencils are nearly as good. It's true! I bought Hurricane Gray - a nice dark gray - and Panama - a coffee brown. These liners go on smoothly without pulling at my eyes and last all day, even on the lower lid, although I think if I was going out in the evening I'd do a little touching up. The color fades a little more than Lancome, but still is very acceptable.

SpecialEyes Mono Eye Shadow ($1.97)
I bought the eye shadow singles, although Rimmel does make two-color combo sets. My choices were a Moonstone (creamy white), Day (basic beige), Romance (beige-y pink), Moonlight (pale gray), Fjord Blue (lavender), and Cosmix (deep khaki green). I used them in a number of combinations and had a lot of fun. But off the Rimmel products I tried, I liked the eye shadow least. There's not enough pigment in the darker colors so it takes a ton of product to get adequate color. Also the powder tends to scatter around when applying it with a shadow brush (which does not come with it). I liked the beige and the gray enough to use them up, but probably not to buy again.

Exaggerate Mascara ($3.97)
I'm really happy with this mascara. I bought the Black/Brown and it's perfect. I hate runny mascara or mascara that's too thick. This one is just right. It stays on without smudging but comes off easily with eye makeup remover. What else to say?

1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Liner Pencil ($1.97)
I don't usually use lip pencil -- mostly just too lazy and many I've tried have been not soft enough. But this is a good lip pencil. I got it in Spice and it coordinates very well with the two lipsticks I also purchased. It's soft enough to go on easily and stays on. I've used it a few times on it's own - colored in my entire lips and then put clear lip gloss over it. That gives really long lasting color.

1000 Kisses Stay On Lipstick ($3.97)
Rimmel makes several kinds of lipstick, but I tried the one advertised to last through everything! I start drinking coffee immediately on getting to work in the morning and usually spend half the day lipstick-less, having transferred it to my coffee cup! Again, Rimmel comes through. I tried Praline, a coral-beige, and Toffee, a brown-brick. Both go on creamy and quickly change to a smooth, but not dry, surface that lasts for hours even when I eat and drink. In the words of Martha S., it's a good thing!

Lasting Finish Nail Polish ($1.97)
I never wear polish on my fingernails because I'm just too hard on them, but I like to try different colors on my toenails especially in the summer. Rimmel has many fun colors, and at this price you can try them all! I bought Ash Rose, a lovely tan pink, and a deep purple one which I've already given away and so don't have the name! The purple was just too out there for me, but the pink is great. I used two coats of polish with no base coat or top coat. Both colors lasted without chipping for over a week. That's my minimum requirement, so these pass the test I'll try other colors in this line.

Overall I think Rimmel is a very good value and would definitely recommend it. Run out a grab a fistful of goodies and don't feel guilty about the price! In the US, you can find Rimmel products exclusively at Walmart; internationally, check cosmetic stores near you.
