MAY 00: SELF TANNER UPDATE
Michelle's Estee Lauder Self Tanner
and Bronzer Reviews

Learn more about Michelle here

I was so excited to review these products as I am a self-proclaimed self tanning expert...and to top it all off my mother is coming to visit and she always insists that I need a "little color." I used these products for about 10 days, applying the Go Bronze Tinted every 3 days and the Bronze Booster in between.

As always, before the use of a self tanner, you need to shave and exfoliate. I also find that I get a more even application if I apply a light moisturizer and let it sink in before applying the self tanner.

Go Bronze Tinted Self Tanner for Body
As the name suggests, Go Bronze is tinted and for me went on as a soft brownish red color. The tint definitely helps to make sure you covered all the right areas and that you are completely blended to prevent streaking. I particularly appreciated this when applying around my ankles, knees and elbows. A quick glance in the mirror after applying also enabled me to see color patches that I hadn't fully blended. The directions on the bottle recommend to let the product dry and not dress for 15-20 minutes to avoid staining on clothes. This is where my complaint comes in...during my first application I let the product dry somewhere around 15-20 minutes, but brownish color immediately rubbed off onto my clothes (in the armholes of my white T-shirt etc.). After another application, I let the product dry for almost 30 minutes and still had a small amount of color transfer to my bra, etc.

Also for me, a pale-faced blond (Stila A/B and MAC NC15/NW20), this gave me quite a bit of color after only one use, which some people may not like. However, the color was a nice golden brown and not too orangy, a big plus in my book. I also used this product on my face even though there is a separate Tinted Self Tanner for face. Again, I loved how the tint helps with blending (a little goes a long way) but the tint was a little to much color for my pale face. After the tanner developed, though, I did have a nice golden bronze color that wasn't as strong as the tint. Also, my overly sensitive, breakout-prone skin did not breakout with this stuff. However, I prefer the Bobbi Brown Self Tanning Gel for face, because of the naturalness of the color and gel formulation.

All in all, the Go Bronze Tinted Self Tanner is a good product, but you definitely have to watch the color transfer to clothes. I didn't like the product as much as my usual favorite, Clarins Self Tanning Milk, only because I prefer a little more subtle color that I can build on. If you like a lot of color so you don't have to keep applying or you aren't as fair as I am, this is a great product. I also love how smoothly Go Bronze goes on and how the tint enables you to thoroughly blend. My application was really streak free and the color really lasts.

Bronze Booster
The Bronze Booster is considered a moisturizing tan builder. You are supposed to use it in between tanning, either real or fake, to extend/maintain your color from fading. In essence, it is a really gentle self tanner that doesn't provide much color. Estee Lauder says that it is great for self tanner novices and is practically mistake proof, which is probably true.

When using in between the Go Bronze, I really didn't notice an increase in color. What I did notice was that my color didn't fade and my skin stayed smooth and soft. I'm going to keep using this product and also try it alone after my color from the Go Bronze fades to see how much color the product really provides. It might be a really great way for the fair skinned to get some color without looking too fake.

Bronze Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer
I really like this bronzer a lot. Although the product says it is soft matte, it really does have a light shimmer that is really pretty. I used it with a very soft brush to obtain a light wash of color on my cheeks, chin, nose and temples. I also added a bit of blush on the apples of my cheeks. The color is a golden bronze with a hint of red, but looks very natural. I'll definitely keep using this product along with my other favorite, Bobbi Brown Medium Bronzing Powder.
