Urban Decay Urban Defense Skincare
report by Adrienne of the Cosmetic Connection Product Panel

Urban Defense is Urban Decay's new skin care line. I tried the Normal to Dry trial kit ($24) that consisted of 3 products: Zen Cleanse 2-in-1 Cleanser and Toner, Detox Cocktail Antioxidant Complex ,and Guardian Angel Protective Moisture w/SPF 15. The cute roll-up kit packaging is great for travel and hangs conveniently in any bathroom.

These products smelled great, did not dry out my skin and appeared to be a great new way to protect skin, but in fact do not truly protect the skin from anything in the environment. Althought these products were not bad, I have used better for less money.

Zen Cleanse is an exceptionally standard, detergent based cleansing gel that contains ingredients that could irritate sensitive skins because of ingredients like Rosemary, and Peppermint. My skin did just fine with it. No tight, dry feeling afterwards and a nice fragrance. It really took off my "stay put" foundation too. This product does a good job, but there are others that do it for half the price (like Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser).

Detox Cocktail also contains ingredients like witch hazel, camphor and lemon peel, all of which can irritate skin. I never quite got what this product was supposed to do that other products didn't already do. It fights free radicals, refreshes and detoxifies skin and leaves a nice matte finish without clogging pores. The instructions say to use it whenever the environment is "at odds with your skin". I liked the way this product felt on my skin but wasn't sure if it was really necessary.

Guardian Angel Protective Moisture SPF 15 is a moisturizer with only 1% avobenzone (most products contain 2% to 3%). There is no reason to bother with this product since so many others provide a higher concentration of UVA-protecting ingredients (from Avon to Cetaphil).
