THE COSMETIC REPORT
March 12, 1999

It seems like everyone tuned in to see the Monica Lewinsky interview with Barbara Walters on 20/20 - and we all wanted to know what lipstick Monica was wearing and where can we get it! It was such a pretty shade! And what about the rest of her makeup?

My sources tell me that her makeup was done by Denise Markey of Club Monaco Cosmetics; here are the colors and products (all from Club Monaco):

Face: Oil Free Foundation, Concealer, Loose Powder, and Enhancer Powder

Cheeks: Hint-Hint Cheek Color, with Twilight Cheek Color and Topaz Eye Color blended together for contour

Lips: Bare Lip Liner around and over the entire lip. Glaze sheer Lip Color, with Cherub Lip Gloss blended through

Eyes: Bronze Eye Color over the entire eye, Topaz Eye Color in the crease for definition and contour, and a little of the Topaz Eye Color under the eye, Black Mascara (water resistant) used on top and bottom lashes

For a list of Club Monaco locations, click on "stores" at their website http://www.clubmonaco.com/Navigation.html. The line is also sold at Sephora.com and Sephora stores. Many thanks to Dana Cognetta of Staten Island, New York for the lipstick tip, and to Coralea from the Club Monaco Cosmetics Counter at Eaton's Polo Park (telephone 416-788-2011) in Canada for the rundown on Monica's complete look.

Spring is almost here, and I don't know about you, but my skin is ready for an overhaul. After months of miserable, rainy Oregon weather, my face looks about as fresh and smooth as a burlap bag! I've got a whole bathroom full of masks and scrubs - some good, some I should just throw away - but I wanted something new that is effective but also really gentle. To the rescue: Better Botanicals Refining Facial Mask ($17.50 for 2 ounce tube). I love this mask! Although it says "for combination/oily skin", I found it to be surprisingly gentle on my normal-to-dry but acne-prone skin. The clay isn't overly drying, and there are plant oils like neem (healing), lavender (soothing) and cucumber (refreshing) that leave the skin feeling fresh and comfortable. The first time I was able to take a bubble bath alone after having my baby, I used this mask and felt like a new woman afterwards! My blemishes looked less red, and my skin had a rested glow that definitely did not come from sleep!

For regular maintenance of my newly smoothed complexion, I decided to also try Better Botanical's Clarifying Facial Scrub ($15 for 2 ounce tube). It has sandalwood, rose, and aloe to soothe, along with almond meal, pineapple, clay and honey to exfoliate. If you like a really gentle scrub or use a scrub every day, this is a nice choice because it's not overly "scrubby" - it's less grainy than most scrubs I've tried. For those times when you want a fresh face feeling without over-stimulating your skin, this scrub from Better Botanicals is worth trying.

I've always thought Garden Botanika is one of the better but lesser known boutique lines around. They have some incredible skin care and bath goodies for really reasonable prices, and now you can even order online (gardenbotanika.com)! With so many products to try, I am beginning to steadily work my way through, starting this week with their Prefix Kit ($25). This collection of products are designed to improve your appearance before you apply your regular makeup. Here's what you get:

  • Lash Primer - This white, paste-y substance goes on before your mascara, and would you believe it really helps! It basically coats the lashes so your mascara has more to grab onto. The before-and-after difference in thickness and length can be quite dramatic.

  • Lip Primer - If you like BeneFit Lip Plump, you'll like GB's version. It's a light flesh colored concealer-type product that creates an even surface for applying your lipstick. You apply a small dab, blend over your lips, let it dry, then apply lipstick. This kind of product has never "wow"-ed me...

  • Shadow Primer - If you find your eyeshadow creeping into the crease of your lid or disappearing altogether by lunchtime, you must try this shadow base. Not only does it create a smooth, even-toned surface, it also helps keep your shadow in place so it lasts longer without creasing or fading.

  • Lip Pumice - I'm having a hard time figuring out just how this stick works. It's supposed to slough off dead skin from your lips, but when I apply it, all I get is a mess: it's crumbly, doesn't glide on easily, and looks paste-y. I can't tell if I'm supposed to leave it on, wipe it off, or what. Yuk!

  • Clear Brow Gel - For those of us with unruly brows, clear brow gel is a beauty lifesaver. Most work like hairspray to hold the hairs in place, but this one didn't quite do the trick as well as other brands I've tried (Origins, Trucco) - it just doesn't hold very well.

  • Corrector Sticks in Yellow and Green - Using color correcting concealers is a personal choice kind of product - either you love it, or you don't. While I know the techniques for using them, I never bother because it takes too much work and just never seems to create the effect I want... The yellow stick is designed to conceal dark undereyes circles (yellow cancels out blue, the color of most undereye circles), but you've got to put a regular skintone concealer over it to hide the stark yellow. Why not save a step and use a good yellow-based skintone concealer (like Stila, Bobbi Brown) by itself? The same goes for the green stick - it cancels out redness from blemishes, broken capillaries, etc., but you still need a regular concealer on top. In its defense, though, if you have excessive redness that regular makeup just won't cover, a green concealer like this is often the only way to get a truly flawless looking complexion. I think you have to experiment with these types of concealers to see if they really do anything for you.
