THE COSMETIC REPORT
April 16, 2002

So many products to try, so little time. What's a girl to do but... bring on more reviewers! In the coming weeks, look for new reviews from some brand new Panelists. Cosmetic Connection is growing, and soon you'll have even more reviews and articles to look forward to. Enjoy!

June Jacobs Spa Collection
I'm still using the cranberry shower gel every day, so needless to say I continue to enjoy June Jacobs Spa since my recent review. Since then I've had the pleasure of trying a few more things from the collection. I just can't get enough of that cranberry scent!

Creamy Cranberry Cleanser ($36 for 7oz)
This is a lotion cleanser best suited to normal to dry or dry skin. It does a fair job of removing makeup, but not great. It can't get tough mascara off, and the long wearing foundations need a little extra elbow grease, so I've moved this cleanser from the sink to the shower so I just use it in the morning. While I love the cranberry scent, I would not spend $36 on a cleanser that doesn't remove all of my makeup.

Cranberry Hydrating Toner ($36 for 7oz)
On an average day, I am not a toner user. I find it to be an extra step that has little or no value for my skin. This one is a basic glycerin-based toner with some nice goodies like carrot seed oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil. The oils are a nice idea, but did nothing remarkable for my dry skin.

Cranberry Conditioning Shampoo ($22 for 7oz)
Have you had enough cranberry yet? :) If you just can't stop at skin care, this a decent gentle shampoo with aloe, wheat protein, and of course cranberry extract. I wouldn't call it particularly conditioning, but I think only fairly dry hair like mine would be unsatisfied.

Creamy Cranberry Conditioner ($24 for 7oz)
After finding Vidal Sassoon Moisturizing Daily Therapy (reviewed here), all other conditioners I try pale in comparison. For my fine, dry hair, snarls and endless frizz are a daily battle without a conditioner (and styling products) that really smooth my hair completely. While this conditioner is nice, it's really best suited to normal hair that doesn't require much detangling; I needed what seemed like a gallon to make even a remote difference for my hair.

June Jacobs Spa Collection are available at The Peninsula Spa in New York (700 Fifth Avenue, phone 212-903-3910), Apothia at Fred Segal in California (check Apothia.com for locations), Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, AZ (phone 1-800-24-CAMEL), and online at eBodyTreatments.com and WhosTheFairest.com. Curl Friends Solutions for Curly Hair
While I don't have curly hair per se, it is naturally wavy and plagued by frizz just like some curly hair. I have a bathroom cabinet stocked with frizz fighters, straightening balms, pomades, waxes, styling lotions, and on and on - and I still have not been 100% satisfied with the results from any of them. When I found out about the Curl Friends system, I was curious if it would make a difference for me.

Step one is Shampoo ($19 for 8oz), a shampoo and light, protein-free conditioner in one. It produces a very rich, creamy lather and rinses easily. I still had a problem with tangling, so after using it several times, I went back to my regular shampoo (Vidal Sassoon Moisturizing Hair Wash). After shampooing and towel drying, the next step is spraying Curl Power ($16.50 for 8oz) all over the hair. Curl Power is touted as a leave-in conditioner, curl reviver and frizz eliminator all in one. I tried it a few times and found that it did nothing for my hair; it was simply too matted and tangled from not using a regular conditioner that nothing would help get a comb through. I am frankly surprised that there is no regular conditioner in this line, but maybe they found that curly hair gets too weighed down by rich conditioners... If you like something light, this is a nice choice so you don't weigh those curls down.

Now comes the tricky part - styling. There are three products to choose from: Low Humidity Cream ($20 for 2oz), High Humidity Gel ($22 for 8oz), and All Weather Shine ($24 for 2oz). The basic idea is that if you pick the right product for the right climate, your hair will do what you want it to. I was pretty successful at choosing, except on those crazy days when I would go back and forth between being inside in dry heat, then outside in the rain. Thankfully there is a really helpful Tips page on the Curl Friends site. It offers product combinations depending on the season, so you can make you hair look its best in any climate. I usually had the best luck with a combination of products applied both when my hair was still damp, and again after blowdrying. I think the All Weather Shine is my favorite, mainly because no matter how much I use, it never makes my hair look greasy. It also keeps the frizz away all day (hooray!), unlike most other products that I have to reapply several times during the day.

A great way to try the products is with their Starter Pack - $19.95 for travel sizes of everything. You can find the pack and a special offer just for Cosmetic Connection readers at curlfriends.com/connections.html.

One Minute Manicure
Hot from the pages of your favorite fashion magazine, One Minute Manicure is all the rage right now. I love to get my nails done, so I was curious how this would work for me rather than going to a salon.

Spa Treatment for Hands and Feet ($32.95 for 12oz)
This sea salt and oil blend is the main product of the line. You shake it up, pour a few tablespoons in your hand, and work it in for one minute. As you scrub, you can concentrate on rough areas, cuticles, the nail bed - wherever your hands need a little TLC. After one minute, you rinse the mixture off and work the remaining oils into the skin and nails.

For the most part, I like this salt scrub because it makes it so easy to get rid of dead skin and roughness on my hands, but I was not able to follow the package directions indicating "initial week use morning and night". Using the salt that often on my rough, cracked skin made my skin drier. When I cut back to every other day and combined the treatment with the Essential Repair Oil ($14.95), what a difference! This blend of walnut, grapeseed, avocado, apricot, jojoba, peppermint, spearmint, orange, lime and grapefruit oils absorbs surprisingly well (and smells good!). During the day when my hands feel dry, I used Daily Skin Therapy ($13.95). While I wouldn't say it works for 24 hours like the label says, it does make your hands soft with no greasiness. It doesn't completely tackle my rough spots, but it's pretty good. I think I will stick with the repair oil and scrub combo and skip this hand cream.

One Minute Manicure products are available at upscale salons, spas and gift boutiques. You can also call 1-866-663-6468 or visit OneMinuteManicureOnline.com for more information.

Ahava Hand Cream ($17 for 3.4oz tube)
When I did hand cream reviews a few months ago, many of you wrote to me to tell me about this cream. I am becoming quite the hand cream junkie, so I couldn't resist trying this one. Now I can see why everyone is so excited about it! I love it! It moisturizes completely, even smoothing the really rough spots I always have from excessive hand washing (having two small kids will do that to you). It's non-greasy and leaves my hands smooth and soft - and it even lasts through hand washing! I've taken to carrying this hand cream with me in my bag so I have whenever I need it.

You can find Ahava products at Ahava.com, Sephora.com, Beautydoor.com, Cosmetic Mall and Drugstore.com.
