I get dozens of questions every week from readers like you asking about foundation - what are the best brands, colors, formulas for every skin type and beauty concern you can think of. I've tried more brands than I can count, and I know there are even more out there that deserve a look. Over the next few weeks, I plan to bring you a review or two every issue of a new or especially worthwhile foundation (and hopefully even some to avoid). This week's foundation search led me to Revlon's new Even Out Makeup (around $10), a sheer, lightweight formula that, after trying it, makes me think "Why bother?" The coverage is so thin, I wonder what's the point of putting it on at all? This is one of those foundations that is so sheer, it really works best for someone with perfect skin, but then why do you want to bother with foundation at all if your skin is perfect?? It seems pointless to me and a complete dud that you shouldn't waste your money on. Next week in our foundation series, look for reviews of the new Foundation Stick and Tinted Moisturizer from Garden Botanika. I've been using them for just over a week, and so far, so good! I can't remember a fall season with more colors to choose from than this one. I recently picked up a few shades from BeneFit's new fall collection and have been gearing up for the cold weather just to start wearing these great new hues! BeneFit's fall colors include four new lipsticks ($14 each): "rockin' betty" (medium grape purple), "reel me rhonda" (slightly sheer purple, similar to "rockin' betty"), "ruby vibes" (medium blue red; my favorite of the collection), and "bag me baby" (medium copper brown). For you gloss lovers, the new "jelly" shade ($12) is just as deliciously grape-y as it sounds! For eyes, the two new cream shadows ($13 each) in "nina's nugget" (light shimmery gold) and "fantasy trip" (outrageously deep purple) are nice complements to the lipstick shades. In my opinion, BeneFit makes one of the best creaseless cream shadows available, and they come in a gorgeous assortment of colors. Also new from BeneFit are two skin-related products, Dr. Feelgood and F.Y...eye! Dr. Feelgood ($24) is sort of like a cream version of oil blotting papers. It comes in a tin with a sponge and is meant to be used over your makeup (or alone) to maintain a matte, oil-free finish. I was skeptical at first, but I really like it much better than pressed powder. It adds no extra color or makeup, it only removes the shine without making your skin look powdery or chalky. For any degree of oily skin, Dr. Feelgood is worth checking out. For veiny or unevenly colored eyelids, F.Y...eye! ($18) is a handy eye cream and makeup base in one. The salmon pink shade neutralizes uneven color and creates a smooth base to help your shadow last longer. Although I like this cream, I think the only benefit it has over a regular concealer is the salmon color, which may look more natural and makeup-free on some skin tones (nice if you wear minimal makeup, or for the weekend). I think for everyday, I'll stick to a separate eye cream and skintone concealer (for the curious, I'm currently using Clarins Extra Firming Eye Contour Cream and Estee Lauder Uncircle Concealer).
